It's interesting to look at the way people analyse songs. I'm yet to find
people who go about it in the process that I use.

Unfortunately, such is my life that I rarely get to see videos for songs. I
have seen both the Spoonman and Blackhole Sun (BHS) videos, and thought that
they were both very interesting but in no way influenced my opinion on the
songs - the following description of how I listen to a song will hopefully
tell you why:

First I listen to the MUSIC, not the lyrics. I establish the beat of the
song in my head and listen to the harmonies, chord progressions, use of
instruments etc (in case your wondering, yeah, I'm play a musical
intrument). This is why Black Hole Sun has remained a favourite of mine - it
may be (relatively) slow, but it is very interesting musically. At this
stage, the vocalist is just another instrument.

After about ten listens (or however many it takes), if I like the music,
I'll start to pay attention to the lyrics, and it's not until many listens
later that I know what the song may or may not be about - I still have no
idea what BHS is about! To give you a classic example (for you Pearl Jam
fans), it took me two months before I realised that Spin The Black Circle
was about Vinyl!

Hence, it's usually not the meaning of lyrics for which a like a song...

Just my three pence worth...

Jackhammer.

I've finally managed to get some scripts together that will allow me
to compile each day's messages and send them out as a digest. Please
let me know if you would like to receive somms email this way, rather
than as separate messages; if you would also like to remain on the
regular somms mailing list (I don't really see why you would want to
be on both), let me know.

To make life easier for me, just reply to this message and I will
remove you from somms and add you to somms-digest.

Does anyone know about a commercially produced video cassette of all or most of Soundgarden's videos? I'm talking about the music videos you see on Mtv not live or bootleg stuff. - By the way, if you haven't seen Motorvision yet... see it!

Subject: SG is a pop band + Other good bands

Someone asked a good question a little while back - What other bands do we,
SG fans, listen to? I'm really pretty shocked by the response. The bands
I saw listed I could have easily predicted based on stereotypes or
whatever. e.g. Pearl Jam, FNM, Primus, Alice in Chains - They're all pop
bands, including SG. By pop I mean popular, NOT pop-sounding. Musical
styles are so screwed up now-a-days that some bands like SG wouldn't really
belong anywhere if the same ones that existed 10 years ago were still used.
Some people try though. What's popular defines what is pop music now.

POP now-a-days is just that - whatever is popular. Lots of "Alternative",
"Metal", and "Grunge" is pop, even if you don't understand why. I admit SG
is pop, but they're still a great band. We'll see how they handle it with
their next album. It could be good, good and popular, or just popular.

Whatever . . . what I was surprised to see was that the other bands you
guys like are all POP. I was hoping to see some GOOD, unknown (i.e.
non-pop) bands - maybe even some I haven't heard of that I would then check
out.

But NO.

So, here's my list of good non-pop bands - albums worth checking out in ().
(I still very much like pop bands AiC, FNM, Primus, Metallica, Nirvana).

**Kyuss ("blues for the red sun", "sky valley")
**Mule (any)
**Fugazi - semi-pop (any & all)
**Godflesh (any)
**Bullet Lavolta ("swandive" & others)
Voivod (any)
Fudge Tunnel (any)
Monster Magnet (any)
Hater
Chucklehead ("big wet kiss")
Bim Skala Bim (any)
Danzig - OK, pop (#1)
Boss Hog
Thumper
** Please do yourself a favor & give these bands a serious listen.

How many have heard of these bands?
OK, enough talk. What bands (pop & non-pop) do you like?

Adios,
-Paul-

you can get "hands all over" and "loud love" from the video louder than love.
And you can get "spoonman", "fell on black days", "Black Hole Sun" and "My
Wave" all unedited from the A&M promo video sampler #9. You can get "Jesus
Christ Pose" from the A&M promo "Hunted Molt and Gather" video also.

These are the less than popular bands I like:

Archers of Loaf, Truly, Mekons, Fig Dish, Crunt, Gutterball, Pavement,

This is the less than spirited end of my post.
