Killer album. Hiro rocked and wrote some great music. My favorite song though is "Hands All Over", a Chris Cornell/Kim Thayil tune. Love the pro-earth message. Kim carved out a nice riff and beautiful melodies that are great to play on the guitar. Does anybody else dig the Indian (dont't know how else to describe it) influence Kim injects into this song? Particularly the melody and (oh shit we just had and earthquake!! 10:17 p.m., Magnitude 3.1,3 miles NE of Hemet, Southern California. That's where I'm at! :-@) counter-melodies. A few of my unsolved mysteries: Who is Kevin and who is Kevin's Mom? Who took the hard road? What are they full on (besides Kevin's Mom)? Answers please. Even thugh I promoted Hiro doesn't mean I dont't think Ben Shepherd isn't one of the most intelligent musicians around. And a kick-ass bassist to boot. __________________________ Mr Full Mr Have Kills Mr Empty Hands __________________________ WE STILL HAVE HALF A CHANCE ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Aug 1995 01:48:02 -0400 From: RHHaas@aol.com To: MichaelB@humongous.com, gbf2033@infonet.st-johns.nf.ca, somms@MIT.EDU Subject: Re: not to the list In a message dated 95-08-09 21:09:48 EDT, MichaelB@humongous.com (Michael Barnes) writes: >) > > >Oddly enough, Louder than Love was the first ever CD I bought, way back >when. I like soundgarden as they are now, so maybe it's better that hiro didn't stay on. I do like what he brought to the band, in terms of songwriting and stuff, but I think that ben has had an enormous influence in the direction the band has taken. as to who is the better bass guitarist, that is up to the bass players of the list. for songwriting...I can't make up my mind. hiro wrote some cool stuff on their earlier albums, and ben had that shocker (half). but ben has written some good tunes too, so I guess that I'd have to vote for ben. feel free to disagree :) ----------------------------------- a thousand doors, a thousand lies rooms a thousand years wide ----------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Aug 1995 23:31:40 -0700 To: somms@MIT.EDU From: Mark Krubsack Subject: The Soundgarden Digest What's up with the digest? First of all, Nirvana sucks. All of their music is diatonic, and all of them suck as musicians. Kurt Cobain was a screwed up bastard and it was no surprise he shot himself. Also, Hole sucks, Courney Love is a stupid bitch who can't sing, and all of their songs suck. Led Zeppelin is awesome because their music was awesome then and now, and inspired this whole generation of music. Okay, I got this out of my system. Comments To: somms@MIT.EDU I have to disagree with you about your criticism of nirvana. The music wasn't the best music in the world, however all the songs had nice melody's, and the main point of the songs were the lyrics. Secondly you talk about soundgarden being mainstream when you fall into the courtney love trap of most MTV viewers. Courtney's music is only vaguely related to Kurts, They got married nit the bands. If you listened to a song like doll parts or violet you would se that she is not in fact a stupid bitch, and that there are some quite intellignet lyrics hidden behind her punk style of music. Punk music is not meant to be as orchestrated or as complicated as the alternative rock/metal put out by soundgarden, smashing pumpkins, kings x and the like. Mainstream acceptance for soundgarden is a function of people liking their music not a function of them intentionally trying to gain mainstream acceptance. Just because a large segment of the population like your music does not denote a intentional attempt to "sell out" Superunknown is a angry dark album that is not easily accesible to the top 40 kids, this is not pop music in our current escapist culture. On the subject of Led Zepplin, I do not think that every band that is out today is a complete Led Zepplin offspring. Black sabbath was around in that era also. I think that soundgardens main influence would be like them. To quote Kim "We wanted to do stuff like sabbath without the parts that suck, but later went in our own direction" Soundgarden is a unique band that draws on themselves for inspiration not they're record collection. Secondly since they will be impossible to imitate I vote them the best band of all times. Chris even said that it would be impossible to duplicate the diverse and unique offerings each of them bring to the band. just my long winded opinion.
