Happy New Year one and all. I finally got a CD-ROM drive of my own for
christmas. It's a long story, so I'll simplify it. I got a Creative
Quad-speed "MPC2" CD-ROM drive. I had tried it in the store and it
played the SG CD+, so I bought the drive. I get home, and after a series
of trips back and forth to the store and
eventual-motherboard-replacement, I get the drive and software
installed. 486dx2-66 12megs. It DOESN'T play the DISC!! I tried all
that Corel bullshit too. It told me in a rather ambiguous way that my
drive could not play CD+ discs. I went back to
the store, and copied the driver from the system on which I had played it
and brought it home and it works fine. So, the moral of the story is, if
it does not play on your drive, do not give up. I am going to post
drivers that work on my website as soon as I can. See you all later...

Hi I'm new. I must sound like a total retard but what are the bands
that people on this list like other than the obvious Soundgarden.
Does anyone else think that Andy Wood was a god? Does anyone else
think Jason Everman was never really a musician but thought it was
cool to learn how to twang a little guitar music? Who else misses
Hiro from the lineup? Has anyone heard of the Gandharvas, what does
their name mean? Does anyone else like Mudhoney or Green River? How
can I get a hold of SOMMS?

THIS IS FOR EVERYONE who has been E-mailing me & asking for info on SG (and
particularly Susan Silvers). ALL info I had on SG came directly from the
Rolling Stone and Spin interviews. I don't have a scanner & don't have time
to post every word that CC had to say on: "meanings of lyrics", "his
relationship with Susan", "his childhood", "his school record", "his
agoraphobia" etc. etc. etc. I got 7 letters asking me for the meaning of
"Fell On Black Days" alone...come on! And I"M not the one who said Chris
once had agoraphobia, HE DID! I think I've posted at least ten times on how
you can get these back-issues. Doesn't anyone else out there buy magazines?
BY THE WAY, the January 1996 issue of RIP has a great article (with photos)
on Susan Silvers.

Na, They Might Be Giants. Their lyrics are the greatest, other than
Chris'.

Well, kinda, but wouldn't it be kinda awkward to have two bassists? But
if anyone could pull it off, sg would be the band to do it.

Go to MIT and find this guy named Seth Perlman. Find out what room he's
in and there should be a copy in there. -j

aka Philip Fetters, "He Who Walks Between" aka The Equalist
aka Chicka Jackeen, A Livein Thesu (Per Unkn Own). Boom biddy bye bye!

I actually had to move out of my room because I had so many copies of
SOMMS that there was no room for me any more. Ha...

Ha.

Did anyone besides me take especial pleasure in that real weird guitar
part in the photo space jam? It's got tons of reverb and distortion and
feedback. I never really noticed it before, but the other night I was
seriously tripping myself out with it. I must have played it 20 times in
a row.

To be quite honest, I couldn't care less how an interview perceives a
band. If the music is there, and with Soundgarden it certainly is,
what has to be said about it is irrelevant. I think interviews are
too pretentious anyway, rather than focus on the music, it takes the
individuals and turns them into "idolised" characters. And I'm sure
Chris Cornell wasn't so "idolised" before his fame. I think all media,
whatever nationality you fancy, works in the same way.

"Obviously the guy is British b/c the book is dry and boring.". That's
somewhat hypocritical Deb, because you've just read my text. If it was
dry and boring, you wouldn't have got this far.

Subject: RE: interviews and comments from Stacey in the UK

Thank you for your view, Stacey. I've read my sahre of Sg interviews,
and most do say how dour oruncooperative the band is, which is a total
shame. They're human, and I think what happens is an interviewer rubs
them the wrong way so they clam up. They dislike the attention, etc.,
anyway.

To tell you a little story, back in June 94 we were granted passes by
Silver Management, for a show we were going to. "Luckily" for us, she
had sent the band the first issue of our zine and they liked it and the
tour manager also called to confirm passes and tell us they liked it.
We were more nerved up about meeting them than we've ever been about
anyone else we've ever met, and mainly b/c of the "bad rep" we garnered
from the press. Fitting right in w/ that rep was the fact that DC told
us before the show that any after show stuff was entirely up tot he
band, he could not gaurantee we'd even see them. To our surprise and
relief, we not only met them, but DC let us stay with them as long as
we liked and the band was probably among the most approachable and
friendliset we've ever had the pleasure of meeting. Were was the
dourness the press promulgates? I don't know! Kim barely shut up the
entire time, and he's supposedly so taciturn.

No matter what your opinion of interviews is--you really don't like to
read what they have to say, what they think, etc?--IMHO, they've been
dealt a raw deal. The author of the book in question did not go to the
band for any info; he used only pre-existing interviews, etc, which is
rather boring if you've read the other sources already. I was
disappointed w/ the book, thinking it was something new for Sg fans,
and it's really not.

Sorry if my comments were hypocritical--I didn't mean them to be taken
that way. I am wondering, tho, what others think of Sg's image in the
press, Brit and otherwise!
