It's not accessible... people, as a whole, still don't like the band > that much. let's face it: soundgarden do *not* write and record songs to become famous. they write and play for themselves. to believe that they recorded black hole sun because they wanted to get more airplay, draw bigger crowds or sell more albums is ridiculous. just because the song is well-written, has a catchy hook (ie: nirvana) and sounds cool to more people than jesus christ pose did does not mean that the band is selling out or bending to the desires of teeny-boppers and disc jockeys alike. to mr kinser: you definitely are a fan of punkish proportions. I have no qualms with someone who likes early soundgarden material, but what is wrong with 'experimentation'? and did they really change the 'formula' that significantly on superunknown anyway? the odd timing was there and so was the power. but maybe it was more focused power, thanks to better recording and better arrangement. and by making strides as songwriters, musicians and performers, you say they are trying to increase their popularity? I don't get it. does polish mean selling out? does clearer sounds mean less musical integrity? does better songwriting point to a direct effort to increase mtv exposure? this is a shocker. you have, however, pointed out mailman as a good song from superunk. but what about the rest of the album? fourth of july and limo wreck, for instance. or kickstand and the day I tried to live? the ferocity and sheer heavy-ass riffs are in those songs. no attempt to grab market share there. as for the album as a whole, I see superunknown as a superb collection of very different songs, and as a model of what the true nature of soundgarden music is. give a band credit for changing. if you really want a band to keep churning out carbon copies of ultramega and badmotorfinger, then maybe you should stay out of the record store come summer. ----------------------------------- a thousand doors, a thousand lies rooms a thousand years wide ----------------------------------- ------------------------------ From: blind dog Subject: hands of the slaves... And >the reason for wanting *only* "Lump" is because of its ultra-heavy >rotation on MTV. I take your point. But here are a few questions to ponder: 1. Why is MTV the bad guy? I'm not coming to MTV's defence, as such - I don't get MTV here so I know not what I'm talking about, perhaps - but isn't it the band itself or the band's producers that decide what song is going to be released as a single? 2. Why are singles produced anyway? To make money, money, money!! (For MTV? I'd say rather for the band - MTV is surely just a spin-off). For example, from POTUSA album alone, so far three singles have been released - "Lump", "Kitty", and now "Peaches". Is POTUSA going to release the whole album as singles??? Would mean heaps more money to be made....... 3. Why are singles produced with other songs on the CD that cannot be found on the album? Are they really directed at "MTV-driven-idiots" or are they to get suckers like me (fans of the band who already have the album) to buy the single AS WELL as the album, just for the extra songs? C'mon, I know there are lots of people on this list who have bought Soundgarden singles just for the previously unreleased b-sides that go with them........ 4. Is the idea of a single really all bad? Generally (except in Ross's case!) singles are cheaper than the whole album. I often don't have the money to BUY the whole album. So a single/EP can be a good way to get my hands (ears) on something musical to keep me going until I can afford the album. They can also be good for sampling a new band - just buy an EP so you're not wasting your money on the album if in fact after a few listens you decide you don't like the music much. Don't forget music is more expensive to buy in Australia than the US & Canada! (And probably more expensive in Mexico too, right Urbano??). >I applaud those who own BOTH the album and the single. Thank you! :-) [I'm taking a bow now]. >Let's make an analogy: buying *only* the >"Lump" single and calling yourself a true POTUSA fan is just like buying >only the "Black Hole Sun" single and calling yourself a true SG fan. I agree whole-heartedly. >Sorry to be so long-winded. That's okay! Look at me............ {public apologies for clogging all your mailboxes} >What I'm trying to say is that MTV makes some >people reach for the first single they see rather than checking out the >album as well. Okay, what I'm trying to say is, in a totally round-about way (sorry) - why is MTV the bad guy? I hardly watch TV. But I listen to the radio. They (radio stations in general) are the ones who flog singles so much that they make people reach for them..........and who gives the singles to the radio and MTV? The bands themselves, that's who. Before anyone gets angry at me, I will say - I'm not attacking the bands (and certainly not POTUSA in particular) for doing this. Making music is their livelihood, after all. I'm just giving you all some food for thought. It IS getting near lunch time here so I am getting rather hungry. "The main target of the protest is the Communications Decency Act, the part of the bill that would outlaw the transmission of sexually explicit materials to minors. Violators of the new law could face up to two years in prison and $250,000 in fines." (c|net online) The wording of the bill is such that anything considered "indecent" by the powers that be is subject to investigation and legal action. Let me a bit more specific: if I put up a website that dealt with techniques for safe sex, which could in no way be misconstrued as pornography, I violate the Communications Decency Act. If I put up a website that explains how AIDS is transmitted sexually, I violate the Communications Decency Act. If I say "fuck" in this message and it goes into the SOMMS Digest and is then archived on a public website such as the unofficial SG page, I violat the Communications Decency Act. If I say "fuck" in this message and there are minors on this list, I violate the Communications Decency Act. The Internet has, until now, governed itself, and that apparently scares the United States government. The Communications Decency Act is the first step. I prefer to have my freedom of speech and expression preserved, rather than tread upon. And that is why I am protesting. Further discussion of this should be held privately, so as not to clog up people's inboxes with messages that don't relate to Soundgarden. seth ------------------------------ From: He Who Walks Between Subject: Re: black Web No,what about the restrictions dealing with indecent speech?
