Oh wow. I am a HUGE Pearl Jam fan, but biases aside, I'd still have to agree that Footsteps is the better version. I think so mostly for the same reason as Joco here--more feeling. And yet I like what Temple of the Dog did by adding electric guitars and filling the song out more. I was so excited when I first heard Footsteps and realized that it was the same song as Times of Trouble which I'd been listening to for a couple of months (you may have noticed that when it comes to my favorite music, it doesn't take much to get me excited). I don't know how many of you know this, but Stone Gossard (PJ guitarist) wrote the music, while Eddie and Chris wrote the lyrics for their respective versions. So I guess we can sort of see each's interpretation of the song. Such a good song. Kesa ,,,, (-_-) /_o_\ ------------------------------ From: Enrique Olavarria Subject: smokestack lightning i was listening closely to 'ultramegaok' today and i finally decided to find out what song is the one that can be heard in the last 30 seconds of 'smokestack lightning'. i always knew i had heard it before and i thought i had it on one of my records but couldnt remember where. i never got around to listening to every single tape and cd i have searching for the song but i finally did today and to my astonishment i found it on one of the first tapes i examined. at first i thought it could be a swallow or green river song but it wasnt. then i found it in an old sonic youth bootleg i copied on tape some years ago and it was the first song! the boot is called 'death to our friends' and it includes live versions of songs from the earliest sonic youth albums. the problem is, i dont have the song titles written down. does anyone know the name of this song? is it a sonic youth song or a cover song? is it included in any of sonic youth's studio albums? (i dont have 'evol' and the ciccone youth album so maybe its in one of them?) and most importantly: any reason at all why soundgarden put it there? enrique. ------------------------------ From: Caryn Rose Subject: kim and newsweek and the who ARRRGGHHHHH! i (almost) screamed loud enough to get my bf out of the shower. i thought about going to see the Yoko thing at the croc because i'd read the show was kinda kick ass but i was sooo fuckin' tired this weekend i didn't leave the house once. oh well.... according to the SG book (which i picked up for $3 a few weeks ago because it had a bent cover ;) ), the fact that Chris cut his hair *did* make newsweek. I think there was even a date. if you are seriously needing attribution, email me and i'll go look it up. and ya know... gang... all bands break up eventually... the who had *three*, count 'em, three, farewell tours... the first one being in 1982... i remember we all made shirts reading 'the first farewell tour'... not that i want to see them break up BUT the music they make on their own is so interesting that i'd love to see what kind of areas they could further explore on their own... ? all i ask is that they remain true to themselves and break up when it is no longer interesting to them. *shrug* on that note, here's a discussion topic -- what cover songs would you like to see SG cover? last night we were listening to this cool soundcheck of a pearl jam show from new orleans (i was at the show but didn't hear the soundcheck! argh!) -- they covered this really obscure who song and i was losing it totally. so my friend says, it'd be cool to have eddie sing "behind blue eyes", but i don't think he could manage the vocals. so then i said, jeez, i'd *love* to hear SG do it! man, chris could just sing the shit out of that song! (to which my friend replied, 'fuck, chris could sing the shit out of just about *anything*' which is of course the absolute and total truth...) there are *TWO* record shows in seattle today, so i'm off to empty out my savings account and hope i can find that damn 'rusty cage' picture single, among other delightful things... - --caryn ------------------------------ From: sean@ramoth.unl.edu (Sean McCarthy) Subject: Re:What's on da Turntable Ok! Rancid - "...And Out Come The Wolves" - I love the Clash.............and I love Rancid. Saw them live last month and they're simply great entertainers. My favourite off the album is 'Daly City Train'. 4. Sprung Monkey - "Situation Life" - does anyone on this list know this band? I like 'em. Red Hot Chili Peppers meets Prong. Fast, funky, heavy, thrashy. 5. Tumbleweed - "Galactaphonic" - Great Australian band. Wild at live shows. 6. Sublime - "Living in a Boring Nation" (EP) - 'Date Rape' is one of the best songs, musically, that I've ever heard. The beat, the guitar, everything! I just LOVE it. Quite a good message in its lyrics too, if you listen to it properly. 7. Morphine - "Yes" - if you like that brass sound, then I highly recommend this one to you. 8. Nirvana - "Incesticide" - like any Violent Femmes or Soundgarden album, I'm never far away from Nirvana. At the moment, this one is my favourite. 9. The Offspring - "Ignition" - I like punk. And I like this band. That's all I'll say on that!! 10. Therapy? - "Troublegum" - thanks to Alex, from this mailing list, I now know of this band. And I like 'em. Loud, choppy, unique. And Soundgarden? Yes, always SG. Louder Than Love is my favourite this week. The first happened at the Uptown Theatre in Chicago I think in February, 1992. Apparently some girl in the front row was flashing her tits and Chris Cornell said something like "Why do you do that? You don't have to do that - if you have a hole someone is going to fuck it.", but it was pretty clear it wasn't going to be him. The next was also in 1992 at Lollapalooza during all the controversy about the song Cop Killer. They were the only band with enough balls to actually do the song on stage. It was pretty cool, proved their anti-censorship stance and all that. Anyway, I unfortunately haven't seen SG live since that show (which I was six months pregnant at) because I've had two kids and its been kind of hard to get to concerts. My three year old heard Soundgarden so much "in utero" that he's loved them since he was born, and my 18 month old was named after Chris Cornell. Hope we get to see them live again soon. It seems to me that I've heard tis song before. Like a LONG time ago. Maybe I'm still on crack. AD>CD... Afghan Whigs "Black Love" I heard these guys on Conan O'Brian a while ago. They played Honkey's Ladder, and it ruled. So since I've heard good things about them, and I've been meaning to check them out anyway, I bought it, and it's pretty damn good. They need a singer who's more like....uhhh....Chris (who else? ;). Nothingman -That's not a grey hair!
