I'd have to say that my favorite sg song title is...hmmm, this is tough. I usually pay more attention to the lyrics than the titles...Get on the Snake and Kingdom of Come are both pretty cool...Ahh, i know Fresh Tendrils. It sounds cool and the title is not repeated in the lyrics. Also, i must agree that sg have awesome album titles. I think they are going downhill though, as far as titling albums. The best is either Louder than Love or Screaming Life. Ok, screaming life is an ep, so louder than love gets it. But that means screaming life gets the title for best ep name. Soundgarden also has cool bootleg names...fresh deadly rarities comes to mind...Btw, how does anyone know what somms stands for? it's not printed anywhere that i've seen on the disc or paperwork... Also, grote, i feel your pain. But could you have chosen a better offering to the gods than a superunknown cd? Now they have to give you a good life in return...Also, i love the way you told your story. You should consider being a writer or a journalist or something. I am also looking for loudest love. Just because i want to have the new version of big dumb sex on cd. So far i have had no luck and places don't even have it in their computers or ordering books. I'll keep searching. The narrator seems to be a similar character to that of "Head Down." They are an authority or a power that tries to put down or belittle the victim. It's fun to hear how we all got interested in the same band. It's all my best frind Lin's fault. She finally got me to like PJ after playing their Ten tape to me every chance I gave her in the summer of 92. Took seeing some live video for me to like them. At the same time, she was noticing that you couldn't hear or read about PJ w/out hearing about Soundgarden as well. I was aware of a band by that name...can't even tell you how long I was aware, and I knew they had a nice looking lead singer, but that's all I knew. Then Lin began to collect live audio and video along w/ all their releases. Ugh! Even more than PJ,this stuff sounded like so much noise to me! Esp. the older stuff, which I'm still not real keen on, unless it's live. So i swore she'd never get me to like Sg. August 93 we saw PJ and Sg open for Neil Young in Toronto. Sure, I was excited about it, some cool music, ya know? Then I saw and heard Sg...and that was the start for me. The new stuff--which became SU--really caught my ear, and--guys, don't read this--I got my first look at Kim Thayil in the flesh! So mine has been a slow and gradual education; in fact, I still say Lin dragged me into this kicking and screaming! From: Brydon Cheyney CS95 Honestly, what is so wrong with Donington? I mean Soundgarden DO fit into a heavy metal tag/mold, even if the band don't think so. I happen to despise the old trad. metal stuff as much as anyone else on this list, but there can be no-one that can stand and say Soundgarden don't have influences from bands like Sabbath and Zeppelin - I mean they're covered stuff from both of them. Reading is a great festival to, but can hardly be called alternative anymore - 'alternative' has become mainstream! Can't anyone see that? Just because someone is into Soungarden and alternative doesn't mean that lovers of heavier stuff can't like them too. White Zombie played both Donington and REading (or was it Pheonix?) last year and I'd say they're more metal than SG. As for beingq an 'all British' festival, I think that went out the window years ago. Last year had NO British bands as far as I can remember - Metallica, Slash's Snakepit, COC, Machine Head, White Zombie, Warrior Soul and someone else I can't remember, was it Skid Row? I personally wouldn't give a fuck which festival they played at as I won't get to see either, but if I had the chance I would probably chose on which other bands were on either bill. ------------------------------ From: "Kyle Petty, Son of Richard" Subject: stuff... George Clinton long ago used the phrase Down on the Upstroke as one of the meaningless, ultrahip contrivances that he can make cool simply by uttering it.Perhaps Down on the Upside is an indictment of the type of hero worship that takes a meaningless phrase and attaches meaning to it simply by your hero speaking it. Or perhaps SG is calling light to the fact that we are in an age of contradiction and juxtaposition. The history of the world has been peppered with people who have tried to make meaning of the world in a consistent rational manner. I think we all now realize, on a subconscious, if not conscious level, that in fact rationality will never take us to the promised land. That is why we like these tpyes of phrases. I mean "Dopwn on the Upside" is obviously a kick ass title. And it is so widely liked because it reminds us that life is full of contradictions to our intellect, but that make perfect sense to our souls.... (I listened to it from the pov of a tripper, and >it made complete sense--it seemed like it was describing a strange or bad >trip) It seems like *any* song with intensely visual, surreal, and cryptic lyrics could be mistaken for a description of a trip. That's because when a meaning isn't directly evident, one tends to apply one's own meanings to the lyrics. If you are a tripper, you may see that type of song and say that it was written about an acid trip. I, not being a tripper, look at it and see other meanings which are most likely just as wrong. As far as NORML goes, I also think marijuana should more legal, but I don't smoke it. I think SG's lyrics are incredibly imaginative, but I don't think I understand the imagination that goes behind them. However, I don't think drugs are required for such imagination, just genius. I am interested to hear the duet with Stephanie Barber that you all have so kindly brought to my attention. Any clue on where I could find that? (Although I will no doubt be jealous as hell, especially if she's a complete novice who just happened to be hanging out with the bands...okay maybe I don't wanna hear it.) I've been thinking, and I like the Bjork idea kinda, except her musical style is veering away from what I like since the Sugarcubes broke up....but if SG wrote the song? Could be neat. Kristen Hersh could definitely do it. I don't know why I didn't think of her before. Sure, 4th of July could be about an acid trip, but I listen to it and it means something much deeper to me, and maybe, just maybe, it's what cc actually intended when he wrote it (but who knows?). When I listen to that song, it is about some coming meeting, some coming climactic event ("i heard it in the wind, i saw it in the sky"..."thought it was the end"). In fact, I actually envision (you guys i'm sure will think i'm really nuts, but it's what i get from it) it as a song about chris anticipating some meeting with some incredible diva or god or whatever, some inevitable union, some great cosmic event. ok, i'm weird. sorry. but, anyway, i agree also with nate about marijuana. i may not smoke it every day but i still think it should be legalized. - --fleur de vie GARDEN OF SOUND ------------------------------ From: charris@i-max.co.nz (Clint Harris) Subject: well hello there... I have missed out alot recently so please forgive me if I repeat anything (I didn't mean it...) 1st off. Just *how* rare/limited/hard-to-get/will-give-my-left-nut-to-have-it is the BMF/SOMMS C.D?? I thought that it was pretty hard to get a hold of but recently I dropped into my local record store and there was a copy! Naturally I kept my "eek! somms!" to myself and casually bought it. "Whoop!" I thought and went on my way. The next week I paid a return visit to the same store and checked out the Soundgarden section (like always) and to my astonishment there was ANOTHER copy of BMF/SOMMS!!!! (I bought it, of course...) so now I have 4 copies of BMF (2 w/ SOMMS):o) Anyone want to trade a Hunted Down/ Nothing to Say 7" original for it ;-) 2nd Off. Steven Russell was asking about the Soundgarden book in his disco? Well (and this info is for all of you)I *think* I have the book you mention. It's called Soundgarden: New Metal Crown and is written by Chris Nickson (1995). Basically its a bio w/ shitloads of info, a few early pic's, a timeline and a discog. (not as detailed as Steve's). It is a USA book (I think) so it should be floating around over there somewhere (in the dreams that the skies hold...). Mail me if you need any more info. 3rd. About the mailing list rules/ regulations/ whatever. I think its a good idea to stick to SG related info predominately. IMHO it makes for better reading when it is based on SG rather than off-leading topics. Did anyone subscribe to the Kyuss mailing list??? Now there was an example of how pleasant it was to keep all posts on-topic. Low on the "bullshit-o-meter" [tm] and high on thoughtful conversation... 4ff. Finally got to hear the new SG single!!!! I wouldn't mind if the last bside of all the dotu singles were an interview of this kind, where the band gets to talk about the album, and in particular, the songs on the single. the interview itself was done on the kaiser kellar's cellar show in seattle sometime in march of this year (right from the liner notes). the cover is the same as one of the promos seth has got up on the dotu page, with soundgarden written as two words (stacked) in red, with a white background and a picture of the band in black. its pretty striking. as for the other two tracks, I like an unkind the most. it is very short, but seems to me like a complete song. the chorus riff reminds me of led zeppelin, but whether that is because of the guitar or the vocals I'm not sure (probably both). applebite is weird, in that it is not what you would call a normal soundgarden song (at least not before this record). I think it is the ambient track that kim was talking about in that kerrang article. the vocals are *very* different to anything they have done before, except for maybe exit stonehenge :) overall, the single is cool, but I will always want more bsides :) ----------------------------------- a thousand doors, a thousand lies rooms a thousand years wide ----------------------------------- ------------------------------ From: rc@gcc.cc.md.us Subject: Drugs, and other impotencies of the mind. Everything I've read, and stuff I've heard (dirctly from the band, and indirectly) seem to suggest that they don't use drugs (although I seem to think Ben is an exception). I've heard Chris used to have a drinking problem, and is now over it. Other than that, I don't know. From everything the members of Soundgarden has seem associated with drugs (Andy Wood, Kurt Cobain, that Stephanie person that OD'ed, and various other things) should have hit them hard enough to stop any drug use, if they were into it before. But, for some reason, I don't include marijuana in that statement. I know I'm probably wrong, but that's what I think. Not that we are in dire need of a new thread, but i got an idea, and i won't be here much longer, so i have to express it. Ok, my new question for everyone is do you think any band resembles soundgarden? I think the tea party resemble them in quite a few ways: 1. Mystical lyrics. Great poets in both bands, no doubt. 2. Music that is heavy, yet different from what you usually hear. 3. They have both remained in my cd player for a couple eons. 4. Neither band is afraid of exploring new musical territory. (i guess that could fit under #2, but oh well) 5. Almost every member of each band can play (or has played) more than pne instrument. Ok, that's all i can think of now, but i'm sure there is more. Any other bands fit into some sort of comparison? -j Bullshit quote of the day: "The earth's eco-system is not fragile" Guess who said this? Rush Limbaugh.
