Monnica ---------- From: Neuromute To: somms Subject: sadness Date: Sunday, October 06, 1996 2:20AM Hey list, long time no talk . . . been busy, you know how it is, trying to bring Grote along in the shyster business . . . Well. I met Shroom tonight, and rest assured . . .she is as cool as everyone wants to think she is . . . too bad she didn't feel the same for me. I don't know where she was mislead, didn't I make it clear that I was a 29 year old married lawyer? I'm pretty sure she knew that, but she was so dumbfounded that I wasn't pierced and radical looking that she just did not know what to say . . . really wasn't conducive to conversation . . . anyway, I did the natural thing . . . I left. So I guess the point is, I really feel shitty. I thought the point of this list was to bring together different people who had a common interest, no matter who they were or how they dressed. Mistake, I guess. Trust me, I did the scene when I was younger . . . all these wanna be alterna-rock bands are nothing but the new version of Debbie Gibson. I don't mean to get off on a rant here, but when my friends and I were into Jane's Addiction in 1987, it wasn't because they were radio darlings. But now that this shit is the shit, everyone wants to feel as if they are in on something new and cool. Ain't the case. Of course no one wants to listen to us dinosaurs, who did all the drugs and blazed all these tired old paths in the 80's . . . this alternarock thing is new and exciting!!!!!! The point is, who gives a shit how I dress now . . . I make money in the real world, and still know what's up in the so called alternative world . . . therefore. I should be judgmental of you pierced, wierd fucking outcasts . . .but I'm not. I guess I just didn't expect such bullshit from someone I thought knew better. My mistake. The list is overrun with teenage ignorant newbies (flame away, juniors) Seth, youv'e got your work cut out for you. Anyway, Caryn, Grote and all the rest, take care and be cool.....I still wish I could be friends with Shroom, but maybe I'm just way off . . . I thought Nothingman was cool, so what do I know? But regardless, I think it is sad that no matter what really happened, Brian felt uncomfortable and was self-conscious about the fact that he didn't fit someone else's expectations of what he "should" look like... I have to say (and feel free to flame away) that I notice a very big difference in *most* (my disclaimer) under- 23 year olds than in those of us in their late 20s, early 30s....it is not their fault, the y are stuck in a generation that has very different sets of expectations, etc. But I have noticed that they tend to be very stuck on the issue of "looking the look" and IF YOU DON'T YOU MUST NOT BE COOL. I have received Those of us who went thru the early post-punk era and the early "alternative" (when it really was....) days, I am sure can relate to the struggle of feeling that we no longer "fit' into this supposedly new phenomenon....but HEY, we were there when it was just beginning, when people said "Green who? Jane's what???" and Seattle was just another city on the map....to now hear and see that we are in some ways rejected by the "new" generation of alterno-kids, is disheartening....we do have to grow up sometime a nd make choices about careers and families, etc. - that is a choice that some of us have made, not all....and i refuse to be ashamed of it. Why the fuck does it matter how we look on the outside - what could that possibly really mean about our insides?!?! I will be meeting *a lot* of Sommsters in the next couple of months and i will be damned if I am made to feel uncomfortable about how i *choose* to look.....it is a choice, remember? not some law or dress code that we have to abide by if we like a certain type of music.... Wow, what a day today has been. I'mm still mullingover some of the stuff I've read, like the Bri/Shroom meeting and all the comments spawned from that, and I just got done reading a few more later postings on it plus Caryn's reply to a response to what has happened to the list. I've been around the list since last November...don't know if that makes me an oldie or a newbie since I had to unsubscribe for the summer. At this point I can't even really verbalize what I'm feeling, but I'm also becoming very much aware that this list has changed. Its size has about doubled since I signed off in June, but even then, I still see posts from all the familiar names--except Nothing man--and...I just detect a change in attitude or something. Personally, I feel like I'm whispering into a hurricane--I've tried to contribute, I've tried to start strings just to get people talking, and it falls flat. I'm starting to feel disconnected even tho I'm on the list; I don't feel welcome. Sorta like the saying that osme people are more equal than others. I feel like a total nothing. I've tried to extend an olive branch to someone who for some reason took a dislike to me and heard nothing back....lack of response speaks volumes. Then there's all this bickering that's going on--what's grunge, what label do we apply to Sg, what album is better, who's a better fan based on when they became fans.... To cut to the quick of it....here we all are sitting on the net, so to speak, looking for human cotact. We're onthis list to talk aobut something we like and know stuff about, and it's all just like one big experiment. Cyberspace isolates us. It's darned hard to pick up the true meaning to things just written and floating onto your email. Caryn, what's happening to the list? I wish I could put it into words, but I think it's all tied to technology; you know, that anonimity thing--we each feel safe sitting at our computers saying stuff, but for some reason, the list is getting testy. I've said it before and I'll say it again, dear list friends, we all like the same group, for whatever reason, we all like this one particular band's music, and THAT'S WHAT COUNTS! This is the best kind of fan club you could find! It's there for you every day! You can pass around rumors or facts or whatever, it's instant. Sometimes when we meet face to face, it works out and sometimes it doesn't--hey, just like real life! If you're human, then you've run into people you don't get along with and you've run into people you like immediately. Oh, there's so much we could wax philosophic about....List....let's just take a deep breath and remember we're all human and we're all in this together. Allow me to propose this: use private email. I understand many of you are upset about the way Shroom and Brian's meeting turned out, and consider it a reflection of the general state of affairs on the list, but what's going on now is beyond expressing dismay; it's turned into a flame war. And from personal experience, I know that the hardest part about being involved in a flame war is sucking it up and responding privately after you've been hit publicly. But you have to try, or this list will go straight down the drain. The number of posts that actually have to do with Soundgarden is already dangerously low, and substituting flames for relevant discussion is not the way it's going to work. I trust you to be intelligent and really think about what you're posting before you hit that "send" button. If it's not relevant, send it privately. If you're upset because someone flamed you publicly, be the mature one and respond privately. Likewise, substituting drawn-out conversations on grunge, or posting about other bands and throwing in the word "Soundgarden" somewhere as justification is not appropriate. If someone posts something and happens to mention another band in passing, that doesn't justify replying to the whole list. Remember, posting consistently off-topic is Cardinal Sin Numero Uno on this list, and I'll wield the unsub axe like a madman if need be. I once read an article in a musical magazine (at my local library, though for the life of me I *cannot* find it again) about chris and his lyric process. I faintly remember that the time period was around bmf, and chris was talking about how he had difficulty getting lyrics together, and eventually had to hole up in a cabin in the woods by himself to get anything done. to me, drawing flies comes straight from that. > What I was saying was that they, like any other artists, have had to > weigh the decisions of what they record by what will be most, um, > appropriate, accepted, whatever. Think I think soundgarden may be held back by something akin to what you say, kathie. but it certainly isn't corporate nay-saying or right-wing fundamentalism. I actually *do* believe that they record any old songs, simply because they like them. like I said in my earlier post, they record what they want to record (ie. big dumb sex). of course, we only know what they put on their records. so I agree that there could be a whole slew of material that the band doesn't record. but I certainly don't think they make their decisions based on sales or guys in suits. I do know that at times (in their early history) they didn't record particular songs because they didn't fit in to their perception of what a soundgarden song was. I can respect that. but now (probably since the inclusion of 'half' on superunk) the band is not afraid to move away from what might normally be considered a soundgarden song. we know that chris could write a pop song that would blow oasis out of the water. we know that ben probably has stuff on his 4-track that would make 'half' look like an oasis song. but I for one do not think that the decisions they make regarding the release of their music is in any small degree determined by appropriateness or acceptance. if it is, then the band loses any iota of sincerity they ever had. ----------------------------------- a thousand doors, a thousand lies rooms a thousand years wide - words by kim thayil ----------------------------------- ------------------------------ From: Steve Koca Subject: SG radio playage Hey list, I just got back from a vacation in which I was in a car for more than 15 hours. I'm sure that this isn't bad in every individual case, but there are going to be some guys or girls who think they know it all. more importantly, these new listers seem to believe that everyone actually wants to hear what they are saying right off the bat. this is patently *not* the case. for those of you who have recently jumped on the s.s somms, the list has been here a lot longer than you have. so have many of the listers. and we have a pretty strong list culture (thanks caryn) which needs to be observed. and we do want to hear what you think about soundgarden and how their music makes you feel. however, I personally think (and I imagine that I speak for a goodly portion of the list) that before you start firing away, it is important that you bone up on your somms knowledge. that means: 1. waiting at least a week before you post; 2. reading a couple of old digests on sgi.net; and 3. perusing the impending faq on said site. in the end, all we ask is that you *think* before you post. learn the ropes a little beforehand and things will be a lot better for us all. and in light of seth's recent post, I apologise if this was overkill. but I think in some ways it had to be said (even if I'm not the list administrator). if there is something you didn't understand or something you think I don't understand, please mail me off the list. at this point I will also suggest new listers (or anyone new to email) to direct your web browsers to the document at www.iwillfollow.com/email.htm it will provide you with some great pointers. in a completely off-list, off-topic turn for the worse, I strongly suggest that all australian listers (or any lister, if they feel particualrly motivated or able) get themselves a copy of a song by the name of 'shut my eyes' by superjesus. the song *rocks*, and I can fully imagine the female singer (sarah mccloud) singing alongside chris. perhaps listen to jjj, on which it is in heavy crush rotation . ----------------------------------- a thousand doors, a thousand lies rooms a thousand years wide - words by kim thayil ----------------------------------- ------------------------------ From: caryn rose Subject: Re: somms 'no code' poll At 02:47 AM 10/8/96 +0000, The Guitarist-2001 wrote: >Forgive me for being stupid, but what's the SPR session?
