Hey...

Did somebody mention... gavin... (oh, god, I can barely even say it...)
rossdale??? If I hear that name (or read it) one more time I think I'll
scream. All day long at school I've got to hear all the little trendies
say "Oh! gavin rossdale! he's *so hot*! And his lyrics are *so
meaningful*!" It was funny for a while but. . .
So some jackass thought CC was the lead singer from bush. Well
ya know what? I think I would've felt a very strong urge to smack
the little fucker (pardon my french), but you've just gotta learn to
ignore - or laugh at - poor, unfortunate (<--- this is called sarcasm),
ignorant people like that. They're always gonna be around, and
there's really nothing else you can do about them. ;-)

Sorry about this post. It's about 4 am, I just got home a few hours
ago, I can't sleep...

Me thinks I'd best sign off.

Sall fer now...

PS - "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" is a really good movie. (All
joking aside.) Wonderful satire. And ya know what's even better?

I remember Chris said in some interview (can't remember where) that the
reason Soundgarden didn't contribute to the Kiss tribute album was that they
are a democratic band and, as half of them didn't want to do it, they didn't.

Now Matt used to play in a Kiss cover band and Kim has often mentioned how
he was into Kiss as a teenager, so we can probably assume Ben and Chris
don't care for them.

Incidentally, I remember Gene Simmons saying that Soundgarden *were* going
to be on the album but their management stepped in and stopped it. Yeah,
dream on Gene ;-)

<< chris cornell is a great writer, but hardly a poet. >>

You are sssssooooooooooooooo wrong! Cris Cornell is a poet. Go to the lyric
section of the page and read his words devoid of the music they are attached
to. They are literally exploding with imagery, metaphor, emotion, irony,
beauty, hate, lust, personification, and on and on and on and on.

How, exactly, do you define a poet Caryn? As someone who rhymes or writes in
structured stanzas and meter?

I am a writer by profession. I studied writing in College. In fact, I majored
AND minored in it. I have been a huge music fan most of my life. I am very
familar with great songwriters like Townsend, Plant, Springsteen, Young. So I
am well informed and not discounting *anyone* when I say that I believe that
Chris Cornell is the quintesential *poet* of this or any generation, I mean
exactly what I say.

>>um, lance -- ever heard of an *opinion*?????????????<<

Yes, I have and this is mine. I believe whole-heartedly that saying anything
Billy Corgan writes is even remotely more personal than what Chris writes is
a Dumb-ass statement. Just because I chose to use the phrase *dumb-ass* as an
adjective, does not mean I was *flaming* him.

This is a personal topic to me. *VERY personal*. Chris' lyrics are what makes
me such a devoted SG fan. It is the very essence of why I hunt for every
single word he has ever penned. It's what I believe and it is not meant to be
taken personally by any other person.

He was hilarious. Then there's the Shroom's sacred Club Lingerie (?!)

Damn me. I forgot something. I know you'll all be happy when you read
this. I was sitting around the library at school with a friend, and we
went for magazines because we're slackers. Anyway, we picked up one of
those teeny magazines (Caryn, it's possibly the same one that showed a
pic of Eddie Vedder, with a caption that read something along the lines
of "And who wouldn't love to have the lusciously flowing curls of Eddie
Vedder?" *me waving my hand wildly*) and I was looking through the Cool
Stuff section. I knew there would be something in there that would make
my stomach flip. Well, in the Cool Read part, they show of the cover of
Noise From the Underground, and underneath, it says "With a half-naked
picture of Soundgarden's gorgeous Chris Cornell, who wouldn't want to
read this book?" It's something like that. I don't remember exactly, but
there ya go. How do you like that?! I fell off my chair laughing, which
subsequently got me kicked out of the library. Oh well, class was almost
over anyway. Haha. Wonder if Chris has seen that?! :) ~Margret

they are beautiful *songs*, beautiful words. rock musicians are not
automatically poets, nor do many wish them to be.

>How, exactly, do you define a poet Caryn? As someone who rhymes or writes in

even poets who write in free-form have some structure. don't insult me like
this, lance. i'm a hell of a lot smarter than you think, and might just
know as much about poetry as you do.

>I am a writer by profession. I studied writing in College. In fact, I majored
>AND minored in it.

big deal. so did i. i also made my living as a writer for several years
and in fact still in many ways do so. that doesn't set me or you judge and
jury over what is poetry and what is not.

>I have been a huge music fan most of my life. I am very

you didn't say "i believe", you said uncategorically that he is. and i
didn't say that you didn't mean what you said, i was offering some others i
feel have written lyrics to a greater power, at least to me personally.

>>>um, lance -- ever heard of an *opinion*?????????????<<

lance, it does. your statement was so clearly a flame a newbie could see
it. if you want to get into a lyrical debate with andrew dunn, i encourage
you to. he could quote you word for word, line for line, cornell vs.
corgan, and it would be one of the most intelligent exchanges this list has
seen for months.

even *I* disagree with your statement. i wouldn't go so far as to say that
corgan's lyrics are *more* personal than cornell's -- but i would say that
there's a certain detachment that chris brings sometimes that isn't present
in corgan's songs. hence the reason people tend to call billy a 'whiner'.
THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT ONE IS BETTER THAN THE OTHER. personally, billy's
lyrics do not speak to me at all, and cornell's do a little further, but not
to the extent that they obviously influence you.

>This is a personal topic to me. *VERY personal*. Chris' lyrics are what makes

i still maintain that your previous statement was a flame, and i would offer
the thought that the subject is so personal to you that you are unable to be
objective-- which is fine; i'm hardly objective about the things nearest and
dearest to me too. but don't assume that the statement which sparked this
exchange didn't originate from the exact same place in someone else.

this list has a tendancy sometimes to trash other bands relentlessly in our
defense of soundgarden. let's respect the fact that it's perfectly
acceptable to like and love and worship other bands too, and not to think
that chris cornell is the messiah returned. of course, it's perfectly
acceptable to think that he is, as long as you don't try to force your
opinion down everyone else's throat.

I'm a songwriter (Kind of) and I've always admired both bands talents,
through I think that Chris is much better writer. His lyrics are deeper
then Billys. I have to think about Chris's but I can just look at Billys
and I know what he's talking about. With Chris I have to think, you can tell
that alot of Soundgardens songs have a deep meaning. If you look at the
lyrics to the songs on Siamese dream you'll find most of them
are really stupid. He talks about useing holy powers to get
rid of voices and things. Soundgarden is also a much more talented band.

Subject: Nothin but the best for the golden boy...

Hey! I've had several requests asking for a full account of my Chris
encounter, so I suppose I'll tell ya, but I warn you: I have a tendency to
babble, so it may be long! =)

It was July 31, 1994, at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta. I had front row center
tickets (I worked at a TicketMaster outlet at the time), and was lovin life!
"Some days ARE better than others!" I said...little did I know what was to
happen later! Anyhow, after enjoying an incredible show, I proceeded to wait
outside the Theatre for the guys to come out. We waited for 2.5 hours. Trent
Reznor and Kennedy were there (as if I cared). Chris hurled tomatoes at us
from the balcony, while Ben filmed. I tried to get hit by one so Chris would
have to take care of me, but no deal. Finally, Kim, Matt, and Ben came out
of the building and straight onto the bus (boo). The tension mounted.
Finally, the amazing, tantalizing Chris emerged from the building and ran
across the street to where about 15 of us were standing. He said he only had
time to sign one autograph, and did so for a little girl, about 7 or 8, who
was wearing an SG shirt. I stood beside Chris, and my friend took pictures.
I was standing between Chris and the bus. Finally, he turned towards me to
go back to the bus, and I said, "Thank you for making my life so much
better!" Obviously, this was much more effective than "Why did you cut your
hair?!" because he said, "AWWW!" and hugged me!!! Woohoo!!! His neck was so
soft and golden, and I couldn't resist putting a little tiny kiss on it =) !
As we pulled away (boo), his fork necklace was hooked on my shirt, and we
giggled as we unhooked it!! Hee hee! We were all silly! ANYWAY...that was
the most incredible night of my life! And I have pictures to prove it! =)
As if anyone would DARE to call me a liar....

Okay! That's the story of the most amazing, perfect night i've ever
experienced as a die-hard Soundgarden freak..front row...meeting God
himself....kissing his neck...damn i'm a lucky girl =)

Thanks for listening!
Love,
Leslie...not necessarily stoned but....beautiful....

you can do the same thing with chuck berry. wanna tell me he's not
unbelievably influential?
same thing with the ramones, any of the early punk bands... complexity does
not always indicate more talent. iggy pop, one of sg's personal heroes,
writes songs about sex (mostly). "i wanna be your dog" is one of the most
amazing songs in the history of rock and roll imo. everyone and their
mother has covered the stooges "search and destroy"....which means that it's
easy to figure out. so what????

we could debate this for hours. you don't like sp, fine. no need to
CONTINUE to trash a band that means something to other people -- it doesn't
make you a better fan, or a bigger fan. this list is about our love for
soundgarden, not our hatred for other bands.

Has mostly everyone on this list, at some time or another, met Chris! I
know that I have come across some people talking about there meeting him.
I'm so jealous. I would do anything to meet him, he's a wonderful
songwriter with along of meaning to his lyrics. I even live near Seattle
and have never come across him before. This may sound really stupid, but
if anyone knows how I could meet him, drop me a line!
How long have Chris and Susan been married for anyway?

I could realy kick my self now I was considering watching the grammys but
when I saw Ellen singing so dumb song with Bonnie Ratt, I couldn't be
bothered so I went and read some old Juice Magazines and listened to my
soundgarden CDs. Only to find this morning when I get to uni and read my
e-mail that I miss seeing Chris Cornell in a Tux. Whats worse is that if
I read all of my mail on friday I would have seen it there and could have
watched it because I'm in australia it was on Friday night.
I am such the fool. I need pity.

I know how you feel! I did watch the Grammys, but I didn't realize that Chris
was actually to be found anywhere. I knew he was there, and I did a double
take when I saw the camera focus on Toni Braxton, but I didn't quite realize
that was actually him. I did, however, get a major rush from watching Lyle
Lovett accept his award. =) I still don't understand why people think he's so
ugly...

I read in an article someplace about how Chris was asked to play a pretty
major role in The Usual Suspects. Wouldn't that have been wonderful? More
visual fodder for all of those who love listening to his visceral voice and
watching his muscular body move like that of a large, graceful cat's ... =)

Well, I should be off now,
Benlover =)

For Christ's sake. I'd expect this sort of thing on maybe the motley
crew list or something (and I don't know why I'm even
acknowledging it)...
Real, intelligent people know that looks are only skin deep. What
makes a person - what matters about a person - are qualities such as
character, personality. Chris Cornell could have 2 heads and I
wouldn't see him any differently. I heard his songs before I ever
saw his face, and they're what made me love him.

Well, as far as I know, I'm a human. (But who knows, I could be
from Mars and not yet know it. :-) And *I* don't feel any temptation
to go up to men and start harassing them. Yes, CC is a person, and
of course nobody is perfect. But all you have to do is listen to his
songs, and it's obvious he would never do anything of the sort. That
girl, whoever she was, was a pathetic, lying bitch. End of story.

>chris cornell is a great writer, but hardly a poet.

A poet, by definition, is:
1 a writer of poems.
2 a person possessing high powers of imagination or expression etc.

"I'm luck's last match struck in the pouring down wind"

It's lines like this that define for me what a poet is and should be. I
suppose everyone's definition varies... but I'm a writer - of
screenplays, teleplays, long stories, short stories, *and* poetry. I
consider myself a poet, and like I said once before, Chris Cornell is
one of my biggest inspirations - as a writer, a poet... and a person.

That's all for now...

Maybe it's because Lovett looks so much like Ben. Am I the only one to
notice this? I hope Ben doesn't read this and spit on me or kick my
ass..

I've been sitting here for a couple of minutes now, trying to
decide whether I should reply to this post or not. I mean, it really is
just one guy's opinion up against another's, so why bother? stuff like
this generally just ends up going 'round in circles. but since somms is
all about discussion, why the hell not? I haven't said anything in a
while, so I guess it can't hurt (and I promise I won't resort to "your
band sucks" comments, mainly because I actually *like* the pumpkins).

let me just prefix this by saying that none of us could ever hope
to fully understand either of these vocalists' songs or words. if we
could lists like this wouldn't be any fun :)

while you made a couple of good points in your post andrew, I have
to disagree with the part about billy's lyrics being more personal than
anything chris could "ever ever write". I can appreciate that billy's
words may strike more chords with you than chris' or make more sense to
you personally, but I don't know that you can invalidate what chris
*hasn't* written or is *yet to* write. that just seems too shallow a way
to judge someone's lyrical worth. it is easy to point to songs like
'disarm', 'spaceboy' or 'ugly' and say "wow, chris cornell could never
write something as personal as that", but how could you ever tell or
imagine with any real accuracy what chris *could* one day write? that is
not giving the man his due, or the respect he deserves.

hmmm...this is difficult. it is hard to talk about relative
degrees of "personalness" in song-writing, especially when the true
meaning of both artists' songs are not so simple to understand. from my
perspective, the lyrics billy has shared with us to this point *are* more
personal than chris'. with some songs there is no contest. but their
contrasting styles makes this comparison difficult. billy obviously sings
and writes from the heart. there are few songs that I can think of that
are obviously throw-aways; most of his lyrics dealing with (from what I
guess are) extremely emotional and personal feelings.

chris, on the other hand, seems to write less from his heart and
more from his mind. whether that is because of his desire to be shut off
from others or not (see 'the day I tried to live') and to keep his private
thoughts private is unclear. but I wouldn't discount his ability to write
lyrics on a par with billy because of this. in fact, chris obviously feels
*very* strongly about what he sings; I myself believe that the sheer
simplicity of 'boot camp' rivals much of the emotion billy puts into a
song like 'here is no why' or 'blue'. and while chris writes less from
the first person perspective than billy (see 'new damage' or 'mailman' vs.
'to forgive' or 'by starlight'), he has the ability imho to write just as
sincererly and profoundly as billy (see 'seasons', 'cold bitch' or 'hands
all over').

there is little doubt in my mind that if and when the mood takes
him, chris could write songs with just as much heart as billy. maybe he
just doesn't need the release or remedial effects of those words as much
<shrugging>. perhaps we will never know for sure. at any rate, I think it
is unfair to say that a lyricist of chris' stature and ability is
categorically unable to write as well as another. let's try and work with
what we know; not with unknowns.

	just my point of view.
