Perhaps, but "different" would be a better word. Of-course, if you're
comparing Ben's music to the stuff Hiro played back when he was a member of
SG; you will find that Ben plays much better than Hiro. But he also plays
much better than he did on the previous records, in fact, they all do. Hiro
has also developed as a bass-player (as well as a singer). Ben plays a
different style than Hiro did/does. If anyone doesn't think Hiro to be an
excellent bass-player, try listening to Truly. (If you haven't got "Fast
Stories...from Kid Coma", go out and buy it. It's the best CD I've bought
this entire year). Sure he isn't as melodic as Ben, but he sure can play.
Just listen to the songs "Blue Flame Ford", "Hurricane dance" and "So
strange" (it is indeed) from "Fast Stories...From Kid Coma", those songs
alone make it worth buying the CD.

But don't get me wrong. What Ben does on the whole DOTU album is awesome
("beautiful" even), then again, so is what Hiro does in Truly. (If people
find this not SG related, I would just like say that Hiro was a member of SG
for five years (84-89) and was Kim's friend long before that. Without Hiro,
no SG).

On to something completely different.
OK, I feel like a total idiot asking this question, but I just have to. I
finally got "Leslie's coughing up blood" and "Heart and Lungs" (both from
Truly, Sub Pop), but what does this stuff that's written on the discs mean:
"SPCD 86/257" (on LCUB) and "SPCD 24/176" (on Heart and Lungs) ?

The way Chris uses his voice in this song is my biggest draw to it.. He
takes you on an emotional roller coaster ride with each word. He draws you
up higher and higher ending in a rush of pure delight.

'Overfloater' has been and always will be a love song to me. I can take
the words and turn them to verses of love and making love. I know most
people don't agree with this but then Soundgarden has always given us music
that lets each person create their own view on the meaning...

Thanks for picking Overfloater as this months song review, as always you

Well, I'm an artist by profession, and Soundgarden has been an important
influence on my work, less in terms of imagery, but very much in terms
of mood and attitude. I have, however, done two collages in the past
year for myself-- a paper collage of Ben playing, based on Motorvision,
and a collage of various objects relating to the Fairfax show I attended
(ticket stub, the setlist I made during the show, a penny I found on the
sidewalk as we came out, the fortune from my fortune cookie at lunch
that day which reads "you are given the chance to take part in an
exciting adventure", pictures of the band, a cd, and the guts of a
floppy disc to represent the wonderful SG friends I've made via
computer). Whenever I look at that Fairfax collage it brings back the
mood of that day.

lots of people have told me that they don't like louder than love. i've
even read it on the list. when i first listened to it, i wasn't
completely taken, but i did like a few songs (ugly truth, gun, loud
love). however, it did "grow" on me. the more i listened to it, the
more i loved it. the same was true with superunknown. I recommend
buying it. even if you don't like it, it won't destroy you financially
and SOMEONE out there would be willing to buy it from you. what do the
rest of you think?

No! I can't stand seeing that album get trashed (or any SG for that
matter ;-) I am a definite fan of LTL...sure, it is not as great as
others, but for songs like Ugly Truth, Loud Love, Big Dumb Sex, Full On
Reprise, Uncovered, it is a must have...not to mention the pic on the
the cd ;-)

Speaking of Uncovered...I was thinking the other day about what I think
the most underrated SG songs are....Underrated meaning it didn't become
a single and just doesn't get discussed much (I know *here* almost every
song gets discussed, but i mean in general) So...here are my pics for
the most underrated song on each album....

SL/Fopp: Hmmmmmm...Entering
UMOK: Mood for Trouble
LTL: Uncovered
BMF: Face Pollution (lately that song has just been kicking my ass)
SU: Fresh Tendrils!! (my vote for one of most underrated of all time)
DOTU: Overfloater! (thanks for recognizing it brilliantly justin)
Others: Fluttergirl, Missing, Nowhere But You, Christy, Heartfist, Toy
Box and a million more...basically almost every unreleased song!

NO! NO! NO! I think LTL is great! It is probably their only album that
I would consider somewhat "heavy metal." Although BMF is definitely my
fav, it was LTL that I first became aware of SG. There is a lot of
humor on it (I like Full on Kevin's Mom). I don't think there is a weak
song there; I look at it as a "precursor" to BMF. You should
especially check out Uncovered. Every SG fan should have this album!

Yes, buy Louder Than Love. Around here, my town, its everyone's fav
soundgarden album. THe reason guitar mags hate it is the guitar is so
simple. I know 'cause I play. All the songs on that album are simple
chord heavy riffs or a simple pattern repeated. Guitar mags don't like
stuff that is easy to play. Yeah, the solos may be hard but they are
improvised. Ohh, the other reason the mags don't like it is because the
album was written around distortion as the basis for songs like Loud
Love. But you MUST buy this album for Full On Kevin's Mom alone. That
song is worth the $$.

the Nickson book was published released Dec. 96, but there wasn't even a

Yes, I think maybe "underrecognized" might be a better word...

I agree 100% with Toy Box as an underrecognized gem in Soundgarden's
catalog; it's my favorite b-side, a song that I think paves the way
from Ultramega OK to Badmotorfinger. It somehow doesn't seem to fit in
the Louder Than Love era during which it was released, and seems way
ahead of the Screaming Life era during which it was first recorded and
the Ultramega OK era which directly preceded its release.

And then Ben Kinser wrote:

I'm not sure. I think Screaming Life and Fopp are a group and UMOK,
BMF, and SU are a group. LTL and DOTU seem to stick out as illogical
follow-ups to UMOK and SU, respectively. UMOK, BMF, and SU all have a
very definite atmosphere to them -- certainly not the same atmosphere,
but each of those records has an overwhelming feeling to it that LTL
and DOTU don't have, instead seeming to be a collection of strikingly
different moods. I'm definitely an UMOK/BMF/SU person myself; I do
listen to LTL and SL/Fopp occasionally, but DOTU hasn't been in my CD
player since a few weeks after it came out.

I don't know if your entirely right. I got into Soundgarden with
Superunknown because that was the first time I heard them, but I think
its their lamest album. And I don't really look at Soundgaren as what
albums I like, but rather at what songs I like. Every album has good
songs and not as good songs. It just depends on what you like. I listen
to a lot of heavier stuff when I'm not listening to SG (Megadeth, KoRn,
Metallica, Queensryche).

"different" is probably the better term, but I would also go so
far as to say that "preferable" is the best one. I have heard the truly
record (even though it is a little wonky in places, I don't mind it at
all), and going on that record I would argue that ben's style of play is
now so much more musical than hiro's that I really would prefer to listen
to ben. I also think that ben's song-writing is much more creative and
emotive than hiro's, case in point being 'head down' or 'down undershoe'
versus anything you can find on _kid coma_.

since they are single or ep releases, I would argue that those are
just cataloguing or serial numbers used by the record company; the 'sp'
might stand for "special" and cd stands for, of course, "compact disc".

hallo all!
i finally got around to reading all the posts from the past few days, and
couldn't stop laughing at all the messed up lyrics- i thought i *was*
the only one who'd heard things! "spoonman" seems to be the one that
trips most ppl up... at first i thought it was "all my friends are scared
of death" too (and i was sorta disappointed when i found out it wasn't).
i also thought he was saying "i'm together w/ your *prayer*". what
else? when i first heard BiMH, i thought it sounded like "laughter
in the sand" heheh... and of course there's the whole "come on while i
get off" thing... i don't know, i really think it's "come on, like it all".
"all the little pigs have god/gone", i was never quite sure 'bout that
either, tho i do think it's "god" (and i prefer it that way, and it makes
more sense in the context of the song- but i guess it all depends on
how you read into it). that's another wonderful thing- not only can the
lyrics' meanings be construed so many different ways, but even the
lyrics themselves. i think recall chris saying somewhere that by the
time they actually get around to recording the songs, he's changed the
lyrics around so many different ways that he can't remember what he'd
finally settled on! and i don't care what anyone says, in BUTOW, i
hear "and the ones you can *kill*", not "help". and yes, it makes
*perfect* sense... well, in MY warped mind anyway. (just kidding) ;)

>Has anyone ever made a Soundgarden influenced sculpture?
well, a sculpture, no. but like i was telling my friend lynne the other
day, a few weeks ago i came up w/ a new idea for a story which was
inspired partly by "fresh tendrils" (has any1 noticed what an
*incredible* song this is?! one of my all-time favorites- i listen to it
every day now). BUTOW, BiMH, "pretty noose", BHS, "boot camp"
among others have all sparked ideas for stories. Sg has inspired me i
so many ways- in everything i love... in life!

hallo all!
i finally got around to reading all the posts from the past few days, and
couldn't stop laughing at all the messed up lyrics- i thought i *was*
the only one who'd heard things!
"all the little pigs have god/gone", i was never quite sure 'bout that
either, tho i do think it's "god" (and i prefer it that way, and it makes
more sense in the context of the song- but i guess it all depends on
how you read into it). that's another wonderful thing- not only can the
lyrics' meanings be construed so many different ways, but even the
lyrics themselves. i think i recall chris saying somewhere that by the
time they actually get around to recording the songs, he's changed the
lyrics around so many different ways that he can't remember what he'd
finally settled on! and i don't care what anyone says, in BUTOW, i
hear "and the ones you can *kill*", not "help". and yes, it makes
*perfect* sense... well, in MY warped mind anyway. (just kidding) ;)

although LTL seems to be the least acclaimed and least liked SG
album of them all, i happen to love it to death. i think there are
just so many really decent songs on it. look- hands all over, gun,
loud love, i awake, ugly truth, uncovered, full on kevin's mom...
fuck, the whole album is really good, i think. some say it's over
produced and made to sound pure metal or whatever, but i love it. and
who can go without big dumb sex! it's a great album, IMHO.

 mind riot

____
i think it's turning back around
and i think i like it...
