It was never one of my faves either BUTT when I heard it the first time on the boot Omega Paradise I liked it. It has an interesting sound and rhythm to it. I think hate is too strong of a word for a feeling of dislike I might have for a Soundgarden song. There are very few that I might skip occasionally on a CD. I might skip it one day and than listen to it the next week. Every song has some redeeming quality. Whether it's a short Kim guitar solo, or a Ben groove, Matt(who is generally stellar) adding a flourish or a Chris howl or turn of a phrase. I'd never heard of these Very Special Christmas albums before Chris' inclusion on this one came up. Christmas albums to me conjour up some middle aged perma-tanned crooner sitting by a fake log fire and Christmas tree, wearing a nice sweater and singing 'Deck the halls' easy listening-style. And I believe Michael Bolton was on one of the previous Very Special Christmases... I understand the proceeds of the sale go to good causes, which is cool. Soundgarden have already appeared on albums for Greenpeace, MOMA, Women's right to choose etc etc. And they put their money where there mouth is - it was never just, 'yeah, give 'em a song for the album, it's good PR'. But I am kind of ashamed to say that I do find a Christmas pop album - even for charity - kind of tacky. Not that it will stop me buying it in this case! I'm not even sure why I feel this way. I'm not anti-Christmas or particularly anti-religion (if nothing else, it has inspired some of the greatest architecture, art, music and acts of selflessness imaginable). As to Chris' choice of song...how do these particular albums work? Are they 'covers', does the artist get to choose from a list of Christmas standards or carols, or can they contribute their own compositions? It still seems to me a strange 'song' for Chris, seeing as Catholicism is something he left behind a long time ago. But it is a beautiful piece of music none the less. I wasn't aware, until Seth told us, that it was open to interpretation - in the way it can be performed, not its meaning. I always think of it sung by a single choirboy. (So that would be a motet, eh Seth? :-) I'll be interested to see what he does with it. Actually, I think what's bothering me is ( and maybe Lance is feeling this too?), I am wondering what direction Chris' music - and his career - will take? No doubt I'm reading too much into it ( and this is just how *I feel*, I'm not saying I'm right) but a song on Christmas album and a track on a movie soundtrack , the rumours that he wants to make a 'poppier' sounding album and the fact that so far I haven't been able to get into Eleven's music, have got me half fearful that I won't get into the new Chris. Trying to be objective about it I can say, why should it matter? I have music he and Soundgarden made that will always stay with me.And I know the sensible thing would be to wait and see. Has he ever produced crap? Nope. And I *fully* respect his decision to do what he wants to do, when he wants to do it - and conduct his career and life the way he wants. And I can hear some of you saying, give the guy some space, why don't you But I'm curious as to how many of you feel the same way? Would it be possible to do things >like that to pump fresh interest into the list? Interesting idea Deb. But I think that 'other music' and indeed other interests are something better confined to off-list emails (as happens with us). Mostly because, in the past, mention of other bands seems to have been pretty much limited to the 'Bush sux' and 'Cornell could whip Corgan's ass' variety (and that's from someone who was just mean about Michael Bolton :-) Incidentally, I would just like to point out that in my original post I did not mean to infer that 'newbie' automatically equals 'idiot' or that 'idiot' automatically equals 'teenager'. And like Bonnie, I don't want anyone to take 'sides'. I'd just like to see a return to a broader mix of posts and opinions. I don't like (can't stand) the vocals. As we all know the vocals are done by Hiro and IMHO he doesn't have a voice.. I never cared for "665 - 667" either (which I feel was just a joke on SG part). If I want to hear Christmas music I will find CD's that are written, produced, and recorded by people who work in this type of music style. I hope this CD with Chris's version of Ava Marie doesn't end up in the used CD bin with Alvin and the Chipmunks sing Christmas favorites or Christmas with the Brady Bunch.... I can't say I'm not looking forward to hearing Chris's rendition of this very spiritual song (should be noted Ava Marie is not just a Christmas song - - I have heard it at weddings, funerals, and other religious events). Right now I'm just looking forward to hearing any of the SG members doing something. I envy the Northwestern people on this list. To see Matt and Ben in WWC or Hater would be wonderful. Jamie (SOMMs Mom) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Sep 1997 12:02:19 -0400 From: Jenny Grover Subject: nothing to say? Wow! The response to this thread is encouraging. I know a lot of us have felt that "the wreck is going down" at various points. Maybe it's starting to float again. I want to respond to a few points, and I don't have the energy to quote everyone. Yes, I'm sure we all do have a life beyond the list (well, most of us anyway ;) It seems as if we don't sometimes, as all we talk about here is SG, but that's all we're supposed to talk about here! There are times when we don't have anything of interest to say, and when we don't we should avoid trying to invent something (a chief source of inane posts) just for the sake of being "present". But when we do have something interesting, that we know others out there want to hear (news, reviews, new insight, rumors (as long as they are qualified as such), or something that's just damned funny, then we should share them. In particular, all of us who don't have access to the Hater and WWC shows want to know about them from those of you who are lucky enough and advantageously geographically placed enough to experience them. We live vicariously thru your posts. This IS what is happening NOW, and frankly I want to live in the present here! I didn't join the list until I had read all the archives. Now, I admit, this took a hell of a lot of time and I know not everyone has that many hours to burn, but I felt that if I was going to join this community (yes, it IS a community-- more on that in a bit) that I should know what it was about, have a feel for its members and priorities. Then when I did join I felt a certain responsibility to put thought into what I posted, and also to contribute if I did stumble upon anything that might be of interest to the community at large. As for the community aspect-- we ARE a sort of community. Every community has a variety of tastes and maturity levels, people we love and people we could do without (and this is going to vary from person to person), people who are active and people who are passive, spats, commeraderie, hurt feelings, and moments of elation. As long as we strike a balance, we survive. And yes, we all have times in our lives when we need to sit back or drop out. Community members come and go. Life's other pressures pull us away or draw us back. And communities always have times when they pull back and look at themselves, analyze themselves, and try to determine where they are and where they are going. That this is happening now I take as a good sign. It means we still do care. And please do remember, not all youngsters are immature. Not all adults are mature. New to the list doesn't necessarily mean new to SG. I continue to make good new friends on the list, some who are new to the list and some whom I've just never conversed with privately before. All in all, the list is what we make it. No one will get anything out of it if nobody puts anything into it. If we just wait for someone else to do it for us then we have no right to complain. This list is not a matter of life and death. It still classifies as entertainment. But it is a nice place to meet people, a good place (most of the time) to find diversion from the stresses of life, a place to come for fellowship (uck! that sounds like church or something). And as for SG songs that I hate? Hmm... Can't say I hate any of them, but I could live without Exit Stonehenge (tho it is good for a laugh). I listen to it and i cannot believe that a member of SG wrote it (chris, i believe?). it sounds like a cover of some post-punk pop band, and i never liked it at all. In fact, it's a little inconsiderate of people to criticize him for doing it. Professional musicians have it rough, in that they get stuck in one style of music all the time, even though they often want to try a lot of different things. It's comparable to Leonard Nimoy's career as a director. After he directed "Three Men and a Baby" and another comedy, he was type-cast as a comedic director. So he came under a lot of unwarranted criticism when he then directed a drama. People get used to seeing an artist do one style, then are upset when they switch tracks. I think that it's wonderful that Chris Cornell is challenging himself on this Christmas album. Ave Maria is a beautiful song, and I'm sure that everyone from the list who gives it a listen will be pleasantly surprised. By the way, I was wondering something. Is Chris Cornell a Christian? His music is confusing on this topic, because he'll either defend Christianity (ala "Jesus Christ Pose"), or he'll attack aspects of it (ala "Hand of God.") If anyone has any clarifying information on this, I'd be obliged. Later, Mike Apple ******************************************************************** If music were literature... Does anyone remember back in February I posted that a radio station here in Chicago was running a contest called February Four play. One of the prizes announced was a trip to see Soundgarden anywhere in the US on their tour. At the time it seemed like a dream come true that they were going to continue touring past the Hawaii date. Dreams of Sommsfest II danced in my head until we heard that there was absolutely no plans for any further dates. I called the radio station to inquire how they planned to send this winner to see SG when they were not touring. I got a song and dance about A& M being the ones who knew all about it and call them Blah blah blah! Today in the Chicago Sun Times is an article about what happen to the guy who "won" the prize. UNHAPPY CAMPER by Richard Roper To dial a radio station in the hopes of winning a major contest is to invite instant frustration into your life. You won't get through when 37,000 other listeners are speed-dialing the same number at the same time? Of course, somebody has to win. It's just that it always seems to be somebody else. Imagine, then, the excitement felt by Tim Cherney of south suburban Lansing back in February when he was the somebody who actually got through at the golden moment. Cherney was listening to WRCK(103.5FM) which was doing a promotion called the "February Four Play". When you heard four songs in a row by a particular artist or band, all you had to do was be the 103rd caller and you'd get a cool prize connected to the performer e.g. dinner with Slash at the Rainbow Room in NYC. In this case the band was Soundgarden, one of Cherney's favorite bands. And as lucky caller 103, he was entitled to see a performance by the band anywhere in the continental US. "I was thrilled" said Cherney, 22 who attends college and works in a video store. " I was going to be able to take a buddy to some great place to see a great band." Unfortunately Soundgarden broke up a short while later, effectively ruining the giveaway. What are you going to do, go see'em all huddled in a conference room while they argue over royalties? The contest was a joint effort between Rock 103.5 and A&M records, neither which wanted to weasel out of its commitment to Cherney. He was asked to come up with a list of other shows he'd like to see in lieu of Soundgarden. "I mentioned Tool, and they were playing Lollapalooza, so they sent me a list of dates and said I could see Lollapaloooza anywhere in the country" said Cherney. Rock 103.5 promotions director Natalie DePietro points out that the A&M label didn't even have a band on the Lollapalooza rooster, but they were willing to foot the bill for the trip and concert tickets. "there was nothing we could do about Soundgarden breaking up, but nobody involved in the contest was trying to screw him over," she said. Cherney selected an August show in Irvine CA. at a venue called the Meadows. Everybody seemed pleased with this alternate prize package which included round-trip airfare for two to LA, hotel accommodations and a couple of 10th row tickets to the big show. On Aug. 16 Cherney and a pal arrived in LA. "We were at the hotel and I was unpacking and that's when I noticed there was a problem with the tickets" he said "A big problem. They were for a show on August 8th in someplace called Devore, CA." Cherney figured it was just a matter of a ticket mix-up. They'd go ahead and buy tickets to the Aug 17 show , and when they returned to Chicago they could see if the radio station or the record company would reimburse them. Except for one thing. There was no show. Lollapalooza or otherwise, scheduled for the Meadows on August 17. "Basically they sent us to LA for nothing" said Cherney. "We ended up going to like, Universal Studios and we took some tours of Hollywood and stuff and that's not what we came out there for. DiPietro doesn't dispute Cherney's version of the events, "the record company provided the tickets but it's our fault for not checking them. We apologized for the mix-up and we told him we have every intention in the world of making it up to him'" The rest of the article goes on in detail about the battle between the radio station and this guy to settle all of this. They have given him tix to a Megadeath show and offered some others. Near the end of the article Tim Cherney states, " I'm not greedy, I don't think," he said " But I didn't get to see Soundgarden, I didn't get to see Tool. And they are the ones who messed up my trip not me. But they don't want to send me anyplace else" "If only Soundgarden would get back together" says DiPietro with a laugh. The thing that bothers me is this radio station offered a prize in the beginning that was non-existent. Soundgarden was most likely not going to tour in 1997 even if they hadn't broke up. One way or another a fellow Soundgarden fan got screwed. He wasn't ever going to get the prize they promoted so heavily. I listened all day to win it myself. I wonder how many times radio station don't fulfill their promises to listeners??? toni ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 7 Sep 1997 17:09:19 EDT From: seth Subject: POTUSA/Spoonman (was Re: Nothing to say?) As far as this compilation thing, I already voiced my opinion of that, but I too was surprised that more people didn't respond - whether it was to give their votes for songs to include or to call the idea a disgrace. Personally the idea of this compilation disgusts me, especially knowing they are essentially being *forced* into it. Question: >Is Chris Cornell a Christian? Reply: > Chris is Irish Catholic from what I've read in books and articles, etc. I know he was born and raised a Catholic. But my understanding is he denounced, if that's the correct term, the entire religion and essentially thinks it's evil. Maybe I'm using too strong of words here, but I don't think he's too keen on any form of organized religion. His Mom, Karen, also gave up the Catholic faith upon divorce from his Father, and she's an intuitive who gives people readings in Seattle (doesn't seem to fit too well with that strict Catholic doctrine-but she is extraordinary in her gift). I seem to think that the whole family gave up the Catholic faith, save for their Dad. Brother Peter wrote a great song for his band, Inflatable Soule, (which also included sisters Suzy and Katy), called Holy Moses. It's about the family and growing up Catholic and is a hell of a song. It's also seems quite introspective as to Peter's view on their family life. I don't know if the lyrics are anywhere on the Web, but maybe someone else has them or something. Anyway, while being totally different than SG, they were a great, talented and fun band. I heard they disbanded not long after SG did. That was pretty disappointing news because I thought they had a bright future and I just love their music. Maybe if you're up for a change try them, Inflatable Soule - So Sad (my fav) and Golden Boy (slower type songs that SS).
