I even considered writing a sotw for it, explaining my dislike, distaste and small sense of confusion. of all soundgarden songs, this is the one I like the least. the later section of 'half' that didn't make the record, however, is supposed to be really good. I've heard the outro jam, and it sounds pretty swell. I wish they would have put it on there in it's entirity. anyway, this is matt from _modern drummer_, june 1994 - "I turned up the bass drum on its side so it faced up, like a symphonic drum, and I used a snare drum with the snares off. I also did a cabasa part and used one cymbal. I wanted to play that song like a pianist or an orchestral percussionist would, just laying everything flat so I could stand up and play it with mallets. the drums were the last thing to go on that song, which was kind of neat. but there's a whole second half to that song that didn't make it on the record. it was this completely different rock section that we just couldn't get right on tape. there were tempo fluctuations going from part a to part b that we tried to overcome with studio wizardry (laughs), but it would have been a little too obvious." justin ----- so gather around and see what the day brings and see what makes you laugh and see what makes you sing -words by shawn smith ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Sep 1997 04:06:15 -0400 From: Mike Smith Subject: Re: middle names?? im pretty sure its. christopher joseph cornell. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Sep 1997 20:23:55 +1300 From: Stuart Appleby Subject: Re: The SG/Rugrats Connection no no no! you crazy people! i'm saying that what no. 12 on BMF is, New Damage, is described as a New World Order. new world order! from graham:) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Sep 1997 21:32:17 +0900 From: fluttergirl Subject: Heat is rising... Kyle Petty First of all, a 'thankyou' to both Seth and Justin [we're on a first name basis here you understand] for the _excellent_ song of the month -I have been hanging out for that for ages and it was well worth the wait. You have a flair for words there! And getting out just what everyone has been trying to say ever since we heard that song [I speak for everyone here, do I not?]. Second of all... Kyle Petty, Son of Richard. This is a favourite song of mine. The mood is so angry and dark, the beat is strong and the lyrics, I think are _excellent_ in that they take on a feeling of *hate*. But I am interested to know the story behind the song. Being the young'n I am, I can't say I had ever heard of Ol' Kyle and his pops before I heard the song, so I don't know their history. The lyrics refer to what could be percieved as either drug-taking or [drunken?] violence [family ?]. Could anyone help me with this minor predicament? Anyway, I just picked up a second copy of SOMMS for a store in Baltimore. I kind of figured that since I got my copy from a SOMMS member, I would return the favor. So, if you would let the list know that it's available, I would appreciate it. Cost is $32 ($30.25 for the CD, plus shipping). Anyone interested should e-mail me before midnight GMT on Sunday. I'll draw Sunday morning and let you and the winner know the results on Monday morning. If you don't want to post this for whatever reason, just let me know. Otherwise, I'll wait for the requests to come in. Greg Bensimon P.S. Congratulations (although belated) on the list's 2 year anniversary. Hola List! Well...in 53 days A&M will be releasing Soundgarden's Greatest Hits. Since it's highly unlikely this release will include b-sides and/or releases from the S>P or SST releases (reference: http://www.sgi.net/soundgarden/misc/sgland.html) Are you going to fork out $16.99 for songs you already have? Sure the liner notes may be written by J. Poneman (hehe...what a selling point!)... but really...does anyone care? Here is a list of the singles released by A&M. Loud Love Hands All Over Jesus Christ Pose Outshined Rusty Cage Spoonman Black Hole Sun My Wave Fell on Black Days The Day I Tried to Live Pretty Noose Burden in My Hand Blow Up the Outside World Ty Cobb All will nicely fit on CD. And maybe...they will release a video compilation when the regular release stiffs....or maybe that's part of the plan? We will find out soon enough ;-) My greatest fear is a FoBD single compilation :-) FoBD (Lp Version) FoBD (live) FoBD (edit) FoBD (demo) FoBD (video) FoBD (alt-video) FoBD (alternate mix) ack! :)) I would buy the video compilation. But...honestly, even though i'm a collector of SG material...I won't buy the greatest hits CD. Maybe on vinyl...if they release it on vinyl...again...we will find out soon enough :) so...what would you buy? SG Greatest Hits on CD or tape: _____No______. SG Greatest Hits on coloured vinyl: ______Yes______. SG Greatest Video Hits: _____Yes______. i'm just curious....i would think the fine marketing folks at A&M would be curious too...cuz i have a feeling this release is going to float like a lead zeppelin :))) steve - heavy rotation: "Teenage Kicks" - The Undertones, "Narayan" - Prodigy, "Faded" - Ben Harper and the Radiohead - "Karma Police" singles :) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Sep 1997 09:24:59 -0700 From: Andrea Pinto Subject: Re: An Attempt at Intelligence >As far as the choice of material, I never questioned it. I was kind of surprised to find out that Fresh Deadly Roses was released a long time ago. It sounds like something that would have been on SU. (SU aside: were Cold Bitch and/or Exit Stonehenge intended for SU?) Re: the Greatest Hits, what sounds like a neat title for it? How about "A&M Are Making Us Put Out" or "The Rape of Soundgarden"? Definitely do not entirely discount the possibility of there being b-sides, etc., on the greatest hits compilation. While I try as hard as I can only to report news that comes from a reliable source (i.e., the band or the management), it's not like I have a direct, updated news feed from the powers that be. If I speak with someone one day who says there will be no b-sides and the next day they decide that there are going to be b-sides, I would really have no way of knowing unless I asked again. So, as I put on the website, the feeling I get is there are not going to be b-sides on the album, and the singles will probably only be from Soundgarden's A&M catalog. For all I know, that's been changed. And if it has, it could change again. Kyle Petty kyle petty son of richard is a great song, i was really pulling for this one to make it to dotu after i first heard it on self pollution radio. i know that there are a plethera of tunes out there who unnessesarily overload its contents with fuck , you have to wonder how broad their vocab is if all they can think to use is fuck this, fuck that so on and so forth...... kyle follows that idea but it fits. the song is abrasive and really sets out to make a point. occasionally i've come to listen to it just to hear him rant "faster than a fuckin' flash of light" & "you ain't got a chance in fuckin' hell tonight" "daddy didn't raise no fuckin' fo" chris is a genious for adding such abrasive lyrics and still allowing the song to have some intelligence behind it. i'd rather hear chris scream profanity than any other person in the whole wide word, my mother included whos definately said her share.. when you hear billie joe sing it , it sounds childish, when chris belts out "fuck head" it sounds eloquent. i could listen to it for hours at a time. the backround to the song is about the white trash racing family , richard who reportedly was unfaithfulto his wife.. oh yeah and he wouldn't let her touch his car, and his son kyle, i don't about him,, but growing up in that household probably wouldn't include picnics in the park. -CATS4KIM ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Sep 1997 18:35:01 -0700 From: Laurie Casey Subject: Greatest Hits Controversy Hey, I know that in the world of Soundgarden Seth, the list, and official A&M stuff are about as acurate as can be... _BUT_ yesterday on the good ole' radio here in Seattle, on 107.7's News You Can Use, it was said that they were 99% sure that there was to be unreleased, or a least non-album stuff on it. I mean, i may buy it, i broke down and bought Wishkah and i had 50% of those live tracks already, and it was an interesting thing to own. I didn't buy the vinyl, however, which is now much more worthwhile than the CD version. Steve really makes a point with the list of the A&M singles... I mean, yeah- hell, i love most of those songs but... i dunno. $17 for album versions of songs i have the album versions for already... it doesn't seem worthwhile. I say all this now, and i just know i'm going to want to buy the damned CD anyway. = ( but, hey! I'd *like* to hear every version of FOBD... i haven't heard 'em all yet. = ) but again, why in hell would i spend $17, almost $20 once you slap taxes ontop of the original price, and what have you got? a silly compilation that isn't going to flow one bit with the same maybe 12 songs you can hear the same versions of in a better surrounding on their home albums. this whole thing is making me think. it was damn fun when seth asked the list originally about what we'd like. i half took him seriously, but really didn't think too too much of it. i just went crazy and had fun. i suggested some of the most outrageous things I could really think of at the time i was writing the post. when i finally found out that seth really was scamming on us = ) i got excited. hey, maybe this is really gonna happen, i thought. maybe something really cool is gonna be released. now that i find out it's just the standard, straight forward GH type thing... i find myself almost shrugging at it. this is a band who cannot be encompassed by their singles, it just doesn't hack it. so... it's almost like this is going to be a wasted re-pressing of tunes people have heard, but didn't interest them enough to go out and buy an actual SG album. i'm still going to stand by my i'd-rather-not-see-b- sides-on-the-album attitude (unless, of course, A&M wants to release a b-side album, which would be much more profitable than this GH prospect) but i'm going to re-take my stand on the fact that more than just singles should be on this album. A video comp would be great, the one I have of all the vids is all jumpy and was a copy from a trade. I'd like to have an A&M released, nicely packaged, pretty little tape with all the videos. (Including FLOWER!!) It's a pretty well-known fact that Chris is anti organized religion (although I don't think it has been definitely established that he is anti-God, which I don't think he is). And the "recovering Catholics" phrase was used by Chris' mother in reference to Chris, his siblings and herself. I certainly didn't mean to offend. Hell, I was told by some "born again" that I had no right to even call myself Christian because I believe in reincarnation . Who knows, someday even you may find that your beliefs and how you choose to pursue them outshine the dictates of the church. No need to be so defensive.
