Anyone for any other comments? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Sep 1997 02:33:20 -0400 From: Jenny Grover Subject: RS review, etc. First of all, I'm with Rita on the GH and side project issue (except, dammit, we can all stop calling them side projects now, cuz they aren't aside from anything anymore!!). I would buy anything with them on it, not just cuz it's them, but cuz I haven't been burned yet by them. I have loved all the 'side' stuff of theirs, and have heartily enjoyed it in its own right, not by any similarity to SG or lack thereof! Their names on it have merely pointed me more quickly towards some great music that I would have loved anyway even if it was by people I'd never heard of. If you recall the WWC interview with Ben I posted the other day, he does not want people to judge this band by who is in it, but based on the merits of the music itself. Now, here's what doesn't add up for me. A person likes SG. A person likes other bands SG likes, which are not and do not particularly sound like SG. But this same person has no use for SG members' pursuits outside of SG because it isn't SG and doesn't sound like SG? Huh? If you like SG and like their taste, why wouldn't you trust their other bands? Even the brief and peripheral association with Devilhead led me to a band I really like for its own merit and originality. And you don't even have to take a huge gamble by buying something you have no idea how it sounds. The Truly and WWC pages have sound bites. It is hard sometimes to shell out bucks for a comp. with one target track on it (and it will feel like going against my religion to buy anything with No Doubt on it. Yish!) but sometimes that one track makes it worthwhile. I paid full price for Hempilation, having never heard anything on it, to get a Hater song that's a full 70 SECONDS long. I never listen to anything else on that record. Know what? I have NEVER regretted buying it. Convicted is my favorite Hater song. Now, comparing Hiro and Ben is like comparing apples and oranges. They are both very talented players with unique approaches. Their styles are very different. Both worked well with SG. Hiro's work with Truly is brilliant. To my knowledge Ben isn't playing bass now. Some may prefer one's playing to the other's. That's just a matter of taste. I think Ben took more risks, played with a bit more punch, and came more to the fore. Anyone who thinks he is lacking in ability has never sat down with the book of DOTU bass tab and read along while listening to the album. And take a good hard listen to Face Pollution sometime. Beyond his playing, I think Ben's songwriting skills are superb and contributed greatly in turning SG from a band that I liked into the band I love. I haven't heard anything off of Hater or Wellwater Conspiracy, and I won't risk my money on the CDs until I know if it's good or not. With Chris, we KNOW he's good, because he wrote most of Soundgarden's best songs . But even though we love Ben's bassplaying and Matt's drumming, how can we tell what difference the addition of McBain is going to be? This conbined with the fact that WWC is a regional record makes it difficult. Also, it's my own personal opinion that Ben Shepherd instigated the break-up of Soundgarden (although the management says otherwise), and I'm still bitter about that. So I hesitate to buy anything that Ben's worked on. Does anyone else feel this way? Later, Mike Apple ******************************************************************** If music were literature... I didn't catch who was singing it and I'm pretty sure its not the Loungepollooza thing, it was sung by a man and a woman and they sounded like Frank Sinatra and Barbara Streisand...it was so...ODD! Did anyone else hear this? Anyway, Howard played the orginal version of BHS to comapre it to this new version and he said "they took the balls out of this song" and then he continued to play the right version and started singing to it, it was quite hilarious. However, he only liked and sang to the chorus part saying the quiet part "really sucks, how do I forward this?" On their website it says that the album's sales and marketing are focused on the following key markets: Seattle, New York, L.A., Detroit, LIMA, OH. cool. i guess that's where they sent copies of the vinyl to. and i got the hater album when i was living in Bogota, Colombia a few years ago. i ordered it from a store there. however, i only saw 2 copies of this cd in Colombia (including mine) and so far i have only seen 2 copies of it here in Peru (including mine). so it should be difficult to get. maybe you could order it through the net. that is, if you have an international credit card or can get ahold of international money orders. non of these was my case, so i just sent cash for the WWC album. i know, big risk, but i took it. and it was worth it because i got the album and i like it as much as SG albums. however, not all of these places accept cash. superelectro does. but it's a risk. I have not stopped listening to it since I bought it. It definitely has a very 60's sound to it. There's even a cover of a Syd Barrett Pink Floyd tune! But it does not sound anything like soundgarden. I'd like to clear up a misconception. First of all, Ben does *not* play bass on this album. I believe Lou Alexander is the permanent bassist for wwc. Ben sings. Matt plays drums and sings on a few songs. A second misconception is about who writes the material. Almost every reference to WWC stresses that it is John McBain's project. I take this to mean he is the main songwriter. I'm not sure who penned the lyrics Ben sings, but he definitely sung them with some expression at the WWC show...to be continued... Geoff p.s. [NB Yes, the 3rd - in the UK albums are always released on a Monday - Deb] As yet untitled, the album will not only include tracks taken from their years on A&M, but also material drawn from their early albums, released on both SST and Sub Pop. And 'Garden fans will be delighted to learn that the record is set to include rare and unreleased material...." Kerrang tends to lag behind the American press/online news sites and there is no mention of stuff we've since learned eg Jon Poneman writing the liner notes. But I find it kind of strange there is so much confusion over this album. Elsewhere in the magazine, there's a review of the Bumbershoot festival in Seattle, including a snippet on Hater (accompanied by a tiny pic of a newly shorn Ben!) " Cult local outfit Hater then make a rare appearance for the Bumbershoot. Fronted by former Soundgarden bassist Ben Shepherd, with Matt Cameron on drums, the band have recently been performing regularly here in Seattle. Musically they pay tribute to gritty garage bands like the Stooges, and Shepherd's onstage intensity is demonic as they play a slew of tracks from their debut lp and a handful of new songs." Strangely, in yet another part of the magazine, I read... "Mudhoney are gearing up to head into Seattle's Studio Litho to record a new album. In the meantime, some members of the band have been trying out new material on unsuspecting crowds when they play under the project name THE WELLWATER CONSPIRACY. "At the Wellwater Conspiracy's recent gig during Bumbershoot weekend in Seattle, the Mudhoney dudes busted out the moves on some of the new numbers. 'We have a gazillion new songs!' guitarist Steve Turner said after the show. 'Tonight we played 17 songs nobody's ever heard.' Look for a release in the new year." Either it's a Seattle in-joke or Kerrang have got it horribly wrong :-) Rita made a point that no one was talking about the new(ish) Wellwater Conspiracy album, 'Declaration of Conformity'. It may well be that not many people have it (yet) - after two months my copy arrived this weekend. My thoughts..I have only had the chance to listen to it a couple of times, but my initial impression is it is very, very sixties retro. I imagine it was released in the same spirit as the Hater album, that is, they did it for fun, for themselves and if other people like it that's great, whatever. Yes, I know Soundgarden said that too, but I find both the Hater and WWC albums 'throwaway', something I could never say about Soundgarden. I'm not saying it's bad. Not at all. And I've seen Hater live and they make a great bar band. Neither do I expect all music to move me in the way that Soundgarden, among others, has done. But I have to say if Ben and Matt and weren't involved I probably wouldn't have bought it - and I probably won't play it that much. (But my boss really likes it! :-) Deb ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Sep 1997 16:33:00 -0400 From: Maria Joseph Subject: Re: RS Review and keep reading down cuz I do have something to I agree with Laura :) (hi, Laura!!) As you all may know, I am totally in love with Matt for tons of reasons and the first and foremost reason why I love him is he is just an amazing drummer! So, I can relate to Laura, but with me, I don't mind going out buying a cd with Matt on it with other people, you know.. One reason is because Matt is a "role model" to me, but NOT in that obsessive, weird, hero way, but because he's a kick ass drummer and I am now a drummer and, well, let me rephrase that now... Matt is an influence to me. I think that's better to say than role model. Yeah, an influence because he's a kick ass drummer and I took up drums and am looking forward to being a decent drummer. And listening to Matt makes me think, "Oh, wow! I could possibly play stuff like this or I could learn how to do this, etc" even though there is only drum god.. that is Matt, but I love hearing stuff from him. Whether it's drumming, vocals, bass, guitars, or whatever.. like that new cd called Flyin' Traps.. YES!!!!! I WILL go out of my way to get some dinero to buy that cd. Why? Why not? Sure it's a bunch of drummers doing their thing and that's the point of getting it.. and of course it's not the same as doing a Prodigy cd, but who cares.. It's still good stuff. I really really really enjoy Matt's style and sense of humor! And all those people that have met him and got to see him play are just the luckiest people alive! And if Matt stumbles across this post while he's at Seth's then I want to announce that there are not enough words to describe how I feel towards Matt's creativity and him as a person. He's is just one stellar dude, and I love him (in more ways than one)!!! :)~ Kick Ass, SOMMSters! -Maria ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Sep 1997 16:38:29 -0400 From: Maria Joseph Subject: Re: Bright new member... I was very excited with the tape, i couldn't wait to listen to it. So i put it on my stereo and, it started playing and... not bad. WHAT? Yeah, i was waiting for some wonderful stuff, something that could make me touch heaven, like SG music does. But that tape just sounded OK. Would you believe me if i told you that i felt even depresed for this reason? I spent the next 5 hours wondering if that SG feeling was gone. So i decided to play it again, and something was different. It started to sound better, much better. It sounded so good that i played it again, and again, and now some of the songs on that tape are if my favourites list (i refer to Girl U Want & Stray cat blues). And then i remembered why am i a SG fan. That feeling was just the same that i got when i first listened to Superunknown, and the same for DOTU, and even the (for me) masterpiece, Badmotorfinger! Is that SG thing - when you listen to a new album by any band, you usually know what you're gonna listen to, it doesn't surprises you and even makes you feel good, cos you're made to that sound and enjoy it from the very first moment - and that's, too, is the reason why you get tired so early of any band: it's always the same. And there's the difference. I was specting something like BMF, but that wasn't. And i didn't like the new stuff, because it sounded strange, even when there was something i could identify as the SG sound. But is when you listen for the second time when you start to discover the songs... i am still finding new things (and new feelings) on Superunknown (my first SG album)! That makes SG different - the same reason that made them not to fit on the billboard - and the reason that makes everyone on this list (i think) appreciate music in a different way... Geez! The guy is just doing a Christmas song for a charity! The fact that he chose a seriously musical (and pretty) song instead of Frosty the Snowman is quite admirable, but to start reading some sort of industry related statement or religious purposes into it is fucking ridiculous. Meanwhile Ben and Matt are having serious fun and making damn good, refreshing music. Ben aside, it doesn't say much for all those people who claim to be so awed by Matt if they can't be bothered to listen to him elsewhere besides SG (except to expend a ridiculous amount of energy trying to ferret out a sample on one song of an album he didn't even play for)! Well, it's their loss. Jen Grover ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Sep 1997 17:45:39 -0500 From: Geoff Subject: more wellwater comments part deux: wellwater diary At the request of a couple sommsters, I will give my review of the Wellwater Conspiracy at the Crocodile Cafe 30/08/97. I was planning on telling the story eventually...So this is how it goes, from my perspective. Leslie, Caryn, and I arrive at the Croc at around 8pm, intending to have a bite to eat and not miss anything. (I would have walked barefoot on glass on I-5 from Vancouver to Seattle to see this show -- I'd been listening to the CD heavily in the preceding week, and took a stong liking to it) So anyway, we walse into the Croc and find that the only open table in sight is right beside Matt Cameron, John McBain, and friends. I am in awe. For what reason, I'm not sure. I guess because I've never been so close to a member of Soundgarden -- a band I'd been a fan of for 8 years. I guess because I was on the same level. It wasn't a band on a stage -- a pedestal, but myself and Matt Cameron in the same room, eating. After we ordered, but before we received our food, we were required to move to another table so that the staff could close up the front windows and open up the gig area. A few minutes later it was pointed out to me that Matt was again at a table behind us. I was trying to summon up the courage to go up to him to have him sign my cd liner. I wanted to talk to him without harassing him. So I went to use the facilities, thinking about how to approach him, and "Pretty Noose" comes on. About 30 seconds of the song played before it was promptly replaced by something less than worthy. Finally Leslie went up to Matt and I followed. Leslie's conversation began, "Hi Ted!...", and I missed the rest of what she said. After he signed her 7" sleeve, I shook his hand saying, "Hi Ted...I'm a huge fan of Wellwater and some of your other projects." He smiled and laughed that I'd called him Ted. He signed my CD insert, and I asked him if it really took 5 years to record the WWC album. He said it was true, though he was pretty busy in the last five years. I thanked him and sat down, fulfilled. I finished my finw American draft and we walked to the area where the performance would be. There we found John McBain sitting alone at a table. I joined him at the table. He told me that there could be another WWC album by spring, and that he was trying to set up a tour with Mudhoney. Ok, on to the show...The band was positively amazing. The stage at the Croc is very small. Matt at his kit in the back, which was not so far back. John McBain on the right with his assorted effects. Lou Alexander(?) on the left with his bass. Ben was positioned on a high stool between Matt and Lou. Ben sang, perched upon this stool the entire set. He stood up only twice, near his amp, listening to his voice. Other than that, he almost got off the stool once, but still had his hand on it. John McBain performed flawlessly, carrying the band along with his 60's-textured guitar work. When Ben wasn't singing and during the instrumentals, Ben would watch McBain, with a look conveying genuine admiration. Matt, as one would expect, was awesome. He's such an amazing drummer. I don't have words to decribe how he completes the band and the sound. He's also a competent vocalist -- while drumming! He sang "the ending" and "enebrio", and joined Ben on "green undertow". They also played "sleeveless", "far side of your moon", "lucy leave", "you do you", "trowerchord", a cover of the Small Faces' "Tin Soldier" and another song entitled "trouble". Well, I don't know what else to tell. It was a great show -- a night I'll never forget. I hope this post provided a good review without being too boring, especially all the pre-show stuff. If you do not own the Wellwater CD, go out and BUY IT NOW. You can order it from the 3rd gear page at http://www.thirdgear.com. You will not be disappointed. This is by far the best CD I have bought in a long time. None of the members of mudhoney are in WWC, although there is an affiliation between them. The WWC vinyl was released on Steve (Mudhoney) Turner's label Super-Electro. Wellwater opened for Mudhoney, who were playing under a fictitious name(Beneath the valley of the underdog?). Kerrang obviously got their info second or third-hand. Its weird because with all the other bands I listen to there is one album that I like a lot better than the others but all of Soundgarden's albums have good songs and bad songs IMO. I would probably pick Superunknown if I had too. It could do without Head Down. I think DOTU kicks serious ass but tracks 2-5 don't exite me the way 10-16 seem to. Okay I haven't been on the list for that long, so I don't have seniority, and if this doesn't give me authorization to say any of what I'm gonna say, well you know what, I don't give a fuck. I did not join this list to hear people going back and forth about how dumb they are or whatever, or who's cooler than who, which we have been seeing a lot of recently (not just pointing fingers at Shroomy, who must be cool if she is missed that much, much luv to ya, and Mr. Bill) but a lot of us have been doing it. Shall we not dis each other, I mean we're all in this because we share the common opinion, even though it's a fact, that Soundgarden is one of the best, most beautiful, bands to ever touch our ears and bless the airwaves. Now there shouldn't be fighting or whatever, y'all needz to all chill out and appreciate this, if you don't like what someone posts, ignore it or whatever. I mean what is this, our Dysfunctional Family Thanksgiving or Christmas (why don't you just pick yer own damn holiday). I mean of all the things that should be kept on in private emails, it should definately be these ridiculous ramblings of people with maturity levelz of Green Day. I mean my autistic brother has more manners than y'all. There is just too much hostility going on here. What kind of list does that make us. It makes Soundgarden fans look like mean spirited people, I mean we all have a reason to be upset and all, but this is just plain silly. I don't know how SG fans are out where you live, but out here in NYC if ya see a chiquita/guy wearin a SG shirt ya say hi and give yer respect and feel good about it, well at least that's my experience. Ya see, there's an understanding there, we both dig these phunking phat boyz. Whatever, I'm going to stop cause I feel I will begin repeating myself, which I prolly have already done. So for the future folks, keep it kosher, at least for the sake of the children. Another thing I just wanna point out, I think it's kinda sad on everyone's part becuz people don't bother reading posts anymore, I mean are we really that boring, that you won't even give us the chance? Hmmm maybe if you read my next post, it might answer yer question, sorry about it, but I had to, you'll know what I'm talking about once/if you read it. I think that it was kind of beautiful and sweet, but that's my warped mind. I guess you had to be us, well maybe you would or wouldn't be. Aren't you glad i shared that slice of my life with you? Anyway moving right along, another boy story coming along. Okay last night while I was sleeping, I had the most beautiful dream. I'm a lil ashamed to say this, but I was on the internet, in my dream, which mi bud Ashely and I weaved into one of our old hilarious fantasies of dating rock stars involving lotz and lotz of dinner parties. Moving back to the internet, and I was in this chat room (maybe sg, maybe not) and i meet this guy and we start talkin, and he's really cool, so I give my number, much like the fantasy. So whatever, as it turns out, the mystery boy happens to be Mr. Man himself Chris Cornell, now I thought these days were over, me and he-man, realizing it could never be. So anyway, he decides to come out to the Rotten Apple (much like the fantasy) and stay with me a while. He brings Mr. Man as well Matt Cameron, or Ted or Tad or Mad or whathaveyou. Now we're all chillin in my psychodelic funky room (true to it's form). And whatever, I forget what happens. But we all decide to sleep on my tiny tiny teeny weeny bed. Matt's all squishefied in the corner, but he's sleepin and apparently doesn't seem to mind. Might I mention that ole blue eyes had his hair long, and his chin pubes were non-exsistent, lookin all prepubescent and shit. So Chris turns to me, and says "Ya know Dezh, I really like you, and shit." and I'm all like blushedy blush. So he kisses me, but then I start to fall out of the bed, and apparently my bed is like a mile high, so Chris is holdin on to my hand tryin not to let me fall........AND THEN I WAKE UP! NO THANKS TO ASSHOLE BOY FROM BEAN TOWN LYIN NEXT TO ME! He does weird things in his sleep, and this he did three times, he threw his hands up in the air like a lil kid does when s/he is all happy, and I was sleeping on his shoulder kinda. It's so cute..........but not cute enuf. grrrrrr.... WELL MY MOTHERFUCKIN ASS ALMOST KILLED ASSHOLE BOY FROM BEAN TOWN ON THE MOTHERFUCKIN SPOT!!! I reassured myself that all was well, figured out where I left off in the dream, and began again, and you know that that never happens, but somebody must love me, cause it did. So anyway, Chris is still grippin on my hand and pulls me into bed, which then resumes it's normal size. And I chill in Mr. Man's arms, but I look over at Matt, still in the corner, and Chris has his elbow mashed in Matt's face, so I yell at Chris, and he's all like, don't worry he's okay, but i forcebly remove his body part from Matt's face, with a lil elbow grease of course. Oh but my room? Hmmm, I walk in with them, before the bed thing, and look around and see my door, and there's Spiderman pics and posters all over it, cuz ass from boston is obsessed (a 23 year old who likes comix? that must be why we love em). I just figure my mom changed my room/door, but why? So there's this white poster, yes completely white, and it's falling down, and it kinda looks like Spidey is tryin to save it. But on the poster is a sg pic that someone taped to it, so Matt and Chris are like, oh, you like us? And my response is "Hell's Bells motherfucker! Oh I sound dumb, I didn't mean it like that." And they were like chill with it. So anyway, the go back to the town that "eMpTyV" (thanx ozz man) killed. And I find them on the internet agian, Matt had his screen name too.I forget that they were, but they didn't fit them, it was cute. So we go to this SG room, filled w/ "eMpTyV" children, once again thanx ozz man, and maybe even a coupla SOMMSters. So we're chillin, and I don't like to call friends by their screen names, so I'm callin them Matt and Chris, and all these peeps are like yer names aren't Matt and Chris, or wow that's so cool just like sg! So we just sat back and laughed, like this, heheh. And there was some other bullshit going on, but Matt and Chris thanked me for the homble abode and for bein so damn cool, and not for flippin out. Hey ozz, can you believe it, a whole room full of sg phreaks......scary huh? Once again a hug for these people that stayed thru my sexual issues. Sorry it was so long. Hmmm, once again, wrong choice of werds. Tune in next time. Same Dezh time. Same Dezh channel (we hope, I get too many personalities in lately). BTW that song by Life of Agony, written by SG, or not depending on my understanding. It's called Hope, right? Well that just happens to be the meaning of my exotic name . Nadezhda means "hope" in Russian. I'm all connected and shit. I know they >will >for me.... > i am surely hoping so. i think in vain, however. i don't think they ever got enough of a following, of a weird fan worshipping, to live on in the sense that Led Zepp did. but some Led Zepp fans still play and talk about LZ like the band is still alive and kicking- John Bonham and all. (forgive me if i spelled his name wrong, i'm not a big fan.) So for us, for the crazy weird SG fans, this band has no intentions of ever fading out or losing speed in our hearts and minds. Certianly not mine. i'm a short-attention span girl when it comes to bands. hell- i love those foo fighters, but even they bore me after a while. SG has never once bored me. it's amazing. i can listen to the same 6 damned records over and over and hear something new each time, hear a different note in CC's voice or finally hear that weird thing that Matt does in the opening to Flower (which i haven't heard yet- AUGH). and maybe someday i'll actually see the band members on the cover of SU. it's these things that keep the band going for me, for you, and for any other fan of our magnitude. so will SG live on like Led Zepp? it depends on who you're talking to... but i do think they will be mentioned with praise for as long as hard rock remains real and alive. >mind riot ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Sep 1997 22:35:47 -0500 From: Bill Flanders Subject: Re: Question About Future Etiqette Scott Hammer wrote: > Got a question that's been plauging my mind lately. Do you think they > would deem it proper? And how would you feel about it if they did? Its interesting that you ask this question, and you've named yourself Ozzy who did just that after leaving Black Sabbath. Only Ozzy re-did songs that he only wrote the lyrics to. I'm not sure about propriety, but I do think it will happen. Even though "Black Hole Sun" was overplayed, I have read that Chris considered it one of his greatest songs, and he did an acoustic solo in a concert I went to last year. I'm pretty sure that there will be future versions of this song. As far as the others re-doing soundgarden songs? The only problem is that most good SG songs were vocally intensive. Would any of us be able to stomach Shepherd singing Limo Wreck? I imagine Cornell will want to continue to sing Black Hole Sun, Fourth of July, Jesus Christ Pose and other songs possibly considered Soundgarden classics. Due to numerous replies to the contrary about the bottom five songs not being discussed, I obviously goofed in thinking this question hadn't been asked. I have read alt.music.soundgarden for over a year, and actually have read a lot of the digest. This discussion slipped me by. But we are getting new members, like myself who might enjoy expressing opinions on topics that veterans have beaten into the ground. How about just skipping past posts you are disinterested in so everyone else can enjoy what you enjoyed about the digest long ago? I micelf would like to hear something cool and rare, maybe just maybe there will be a studio version of "Christi", hopefully it wont be a rehashed song we have already got on one of our 10 dollor import singles. I dunno I just hope its something I dont have, so it would seem worth buying. Heh maybe "Birth Control" will be on it ;). Well, who knows what they'll do, they gotz their own minds, they're DIFFERENT from a lot of bands, so who knows. I mean we can look at it this way, as far as I know, Truly never performed any of SG's old shit w/ Hiro (he's my boy). I think that they have more respect for themselves, their music, and for each other. But then again who knows, only they do. Besides did I not just read a post earlier talking about how the music styling is different? There we go, another version of BHS for Howie to make fun of. Oh lordie. Let's just hope that they make some new music that we can suck in, instead of hearing the umpteeth version of FOBD. Well I guess I need to run myself to the sto and get me some water, well water, it's good ya know, water that's from the well, it's very well. Don't tell no one though, it might be a conspiracy. But if they do happen to cover their own songs, I'll be behind them all the way, that is unless someone's voice or geetar or whatever looses control, then, well then I'll be just like my man Howie. Sorry buds, but you should have known better. I think they'd be able to bring a wonderful creative side to it though, I mean they all know what's doon. They'd probably be able to figure out how to get around the difficulties, like someone's vox or whathaveyou. It wouldn't be the same of course, different styles, different muscians, so I guess it would just be a different take on it. Whoa, repeat much Dezh? By the Motherfukin Bye what happened to my favorite big hairy man that I love so much? I forgot what he was doin, it must not be that important.....seeing as though no one's said nothin about it for a while.
