That's pretty heavy. Think about it. If Chris left soundgarden, what do you suppose would happen? Kim and Ben did not appear to be on great terms at the time. Either Kim or Ben would probably also quit. What would this leave? Matt and Ben or Matt and Kim? Less than 3/4 of them would not be soundgarden, IMO. Remember how one of the tablid mags reported that the breakup was the result of a phone call between Chris and Kim? Suppose that Chris calls Kim to tell him that he's leaving. Remember that Kim is the only other original member. So Kim says "if you're going, I'm going", so they agree to talk to Ben and Matt and dissolve the band. I know this is highly speculative, and based on a cryptic comment of another band, but PUSA, if I'm not mistaken, know members of soundgarden well enough that they may know more about the breakup than anyone else.
