Howdy. Just got _LTL_ on green wax today (among other things, nod to "you
know who" };) and I must say, damn that is some pretty wax.

Anyway...

I'm looking for opinions on Guild S100's. I know with the SG's I play (as
well as with most any guitar) there are good years & bad years. I'm
particularly curious about how they've held up after the Fender buy-up...same
quality or should I be looking for another year some time back in the '70's
era? Hook me up ya'll.

When I first went to buy Motorvision and Louder Than Live in the Fall of
1996 I found them right next to each other at a store called Saturday
Matinee. Now I try a find another one for my friend and it's nowhere to
be found. I'd check at www.gemm.com, they usually have TONS of stuff,
but you'll pay top dollar for it :( And about Motorvision...Does anybody
know why they didn't name it Badmotorvision instead? It would seem to
fit better plus I think it sounds cooler :) Just my opinion...

Subject: Miscellaneous Sheista

I have nothing better to do so I think that I will post for a second
time (sorry!) I think that I will just discuss whatever is on my mind in
fact, pertaining to Soundgarden of course ;) First of all, what is a
TRUE fan? Is he/she the type of person that has the $$ to spend on
whatever they find? Or is he/she the type that will sit day after day
listening to all their albums not knowing of any other singles? Let me
introduce my theory :)
There is no such thing as a TRUE fan. You either like the band or you
don't. Most people are used to radio and tv hits (not most of us on this
list however). These are the people that could give a fuck about their
newest release or important news pertaining to the band. They ride the
wave persay. Whatever happens to the band is less meaningful to someone
who cherishes every note that is played. This is where the fans come in.
The fans have this strange feeling inside of them. It calls out to them
saying "I want everything that the band has ever released". Most people
have already figured it out that there is almost no chance of that ever
happening, unless you win some sort of a sweepstake from A&M, SST, and
SUB POP! However, there are certain degrees of being a fan, but don't
get me wrong here, there is no one true fan. At least one other person
will have a different item than you or vice-verca. (For example, you may
own every single by the band, but not own Motorvision. Then another fan
comes along with 20 bootleg videos and the "Black Hole Sun" single. You
are both given a form of degree)

                "The Hermansen Theory of Fanacism"
***1st DEGREE***
-you own between 1 and 4 albums
***2nd DEGREE***
-you own all the albums (inc. SL/FOPP)
***3rd DEGREE***
-you have a decent supply of singles/ep's (4-8)
***4th DEGREE***
-you know quite a bit about the band (you buy books/mags)
***5th DEGREE***
-you collect bootleg material (audio/video/etc...)
***6th DEGREE***
-you know/memorize a great amount of the lyrics (to some extent...)
***7th DEGREE***
-you have been to 1-5 concerts where you have seen the band live
***8th DEGREE***
-you have been to 5+ concerts where they have played
***9th DEGREE***
-you think about the band almost everyday (with exceptions)
***10th DEGREE***
-YOU ARE IN THE BAND!!!

Now remember, no one degree is higher than another (except 10). Even if
one person is all of the above he is no more of a fan than that of a
person in the first degree. "WHY" YOU ASK? Well everyone in a degree is
a fan so saying that you have money to but all that stuff just proves
that you are luckier than most, not that you are a BETTER FAN! I bet
than any Soundgarden fan (if they had $1 million) would go out and buy
as much stuff as possible. So having more money to buy a band's items
just proves itself, nothing else :) Also, some SG fans weren't around or
were not able to see them live in concert, I am one of them. I was so
pist when I found out that they canceled the show I was supposed to go
to in November of 1996, and even more rip to hear five months later that
they have broken up! And don't forget, everybody is judged by themself
and no one else... Well, that's my two cents for the day, any
thoughts???

Hey SOMMSters :)

> > world etc...

I agree with Niki.. how could you NOT be moved? Listen to the lyrics.. they're s
o
full of hope as well as despair and helplessness.. Have you ever been so unhappy
you've thought 'Please mother mercy, take me from this place'.. or something
similar? So many of the lines are so easy to relate to.. i'm not even sure how t
hey
do it, but i get a tremendous wave of emotions.. hell, even hunger strike stirs
me
*somewhat* when Chris sings "Going hung-ryyyy-yyyyyyyyy!!!" in the choruses..
There's so many other examples too.. 'Call Me a Dog'.. even the opening line "yo
u
call me a dog, well that's fair enough".. it says so much to me.. It's like the
person has been insulted, but has just accepted it.. given up hope that they sho
uld
fight against it. ("what can I do to make it good for you?") Then the chorus.. "
but
when it's my time to throw the next stone, I call you beautiful if I call at all
"..
the person can't get over the good qualities of this person, despite how mean th
ey
are to them, they love them too much to hurt them the way they've been hurt by
them.. ("you threw me out cos I went digging for more").. if they call at all..
if
they 'throw a stone' at all.. it's so sad..

I wasn't 'pushed' to buy Temple of the Dog because of the tragic surroundings..
i
actually had no idea what the full story about it was until I'd already bought i
t.
I had some idea that it was for a singer, but not sure who and the details
surrounding it. I was just incredibly interested in something created from the
minds and hands of the combination of two of my favourite bands.. (the hunger
strike vid is one of my favourites.. can you guess why? ;) hehe) but i can see t
hat
a tragic background would hype up the sales of an album.. look at those Kurt
Cobain t-shirts.. were all the young kids who wear them fans while he was still
alive? [note: this is not to start anything, it was the first example that came
to
me] ..historical proof shows that tragic surroundings up the sales of a group or
singer.

Like Niki, this album lets me wallow.. I've had a shitty week and after listenin
g
to ToTD all the way through, I feel a little better.. Alot of the phrases in the
songs are very supportive and caring (if that makes sense).. like "don't worry t
hat
i'll take offense" in All Night Thing..

Morgion1@AOL.COM wrote:

> Now lets rate which songs are easiest to cry to

I don't know if he/she was joking, but i gave this some thought.. it's a very
appropriate theme for my week and I had a couple ideas.. I'd say a good SG cryin
g
song would be "Boot Camp".. listen to the wailing sound of the guitars at the
beginning.. it's almost depressing before he even starts to sing.. and once he
does, it's such a feeling of inadequacy and despair - for the lack of a better
word, that you can't help feel dragged under by it.. In my opinion, this song is
too short.. but then maybe that's why i like it so much.. it makes you feel a
certain way, and before you know it, it's over and you think "wow".. er.. i did,
anyway..

Subject: Obtaining SG CDs

I was thinking the other day about what a bitch it is to acquire all
of SGs comps, b-sides, shirts, hats, gloves, pencils, etc... Face it; you
can't have all their shit. Besides, if you did have all of SG's material, it
would take away from the band's legend as a grass-roots Seattle/rock/grunge
band; the SG philosophy of music is "listen to whatever cool accessible music
there is", not "stay up 'til 5 AM on the phone with Sam Goody trying to order
the Haiti release of Superunknown".
Don't get me wrong- I've purchased almost everything I could get my
hands on. (The only SG song I don't have and can't find is FRESH DEADLY
ROSES; Please e-mail me if you know were or how to get it.) All I'm saying is
that the most important thing about Soundgarden is listening. You don't need
it all, and you don't need to an Mtv ass. Just listen to the godhead CDs and
enjoy them, damnit!
         Just my humble opinion.

I agree with Koggle was this a joke or not.....but I do have a song of SG
that gets me misty eyed.

"Fell on Black Days" brings tears to my mind... It is one of those songs
that stir's up memories of your own private black days. Chris's voice is
set in this deep dark mood that pulls your emotions out and lets you
release the sadness of those memories. Each word fits the situation and
events that were those days. The video version is even worst - the
black/gray over tones, the downward look on the band members faces. It all
adds up to loss and pain. I have since left those black days far behind
but when "FOBD" fills the air it also fills my minds eye with tears..

Subject: My opinions on "fanship"

Since the subject came up, I just wanted to add in my opinions on beinf a fan
of a band. It is true, no one fan is better than another. I was actually
finding myself smirking at the 10 stages of fandom. I think I am on the
stages 1,6, and 7!!! Oh my!!! I think you can't analyze these things. You
can't really judge anybody on any ownership.... maybe the meaning of the
lyrics or something. I, for one, am almost always broke. My mouth waters when
I see all those bountiful bootlegs costing $25 each!!! And the mags. And the
singles. And the vynil. And the shows... well I can't complain there because
when I could see them, I did(twice), but otherwise, I'd ask not to judge
anything based on anything having to do with money. Otherwise, I very much
agree with you on the fact that you cannot say someone is a bigger fan than
anyone. Thats just about it.
Igor.
P.S. When I asked a question about tibetan freedom, someone suggested all the
SOMMS members attending to meet. sounds great. We should arrange something
once everyone gets their own tickets.

by outputting a radio into a guitar speaker (I think). It's probably some guy te

Directly from the bestest Soundgarden site, you may or may have not seen it
before

"People want to take so much, analyzing the lyrics and trying to figure
out 'Did you mean that?' or 'You said that to me, didn't you?'. That
cheapens it. That makes it old. Sometimes it makes you feel like you're
living in a land of cows that just don't think."

Not that this is related or anything, but it could just be the wah pedal
picking up the radio station. If you have a big amp, and are in a
moderately populated town with a wah pedal, you pick up radio stations.

If you turn the mid-treble way up on a mixer that by chance you might
have laying around, and everything else down, you can kinda make out
what he's saying. The first line kinda sounds like, "It'll be
increasing to 1 hundred ten...(a few lines later)...pretty gloomy
weekend..." Like a weather forecast, although I doubt it would get 110
degrees and be gloomy.

The voice at the beginning of Boot Camp was picked up by cheap effects pedal,
according to one of the band members. They put the pedal in the spot in the
room where it picked up the station the best and ran a tape on it. I don't
recall what kind of effect pedal it was, but every pedal I've owned has picked
up the radio. I guess they must have been cheap too.
