Deek & Sommies-

Ferrivorous. I had a problem with this word a while ago and decided to
look it up and ask around. It's not a real word, but it is a real word.
It follows all the rules of classic latin, and is actually a real word..
Kim just sort of invented it. I cant remember exactly what it means off
hand though. something about firey.. Sorry I'm not more help!

I thought it might have something to do with iron, as in 'pertaining to
the metal iron.' The word 'ferrum' is latin for iron, so I thought that
ferrivorous might by an English derivative of that word. Seems to fit
with the theme of the song.

Ferrite is either lead or mercury, I believe, so ferrivorous would mean:
"having the tendancy of (the metal)". But, alas, I am a slacker and don't
have time to look at a periodic table of elements to figure out which
element has the symbol having to do with F that has a latin name . . .

And according to Mr. Thayil, it means "metal eating". No, it's not a
"real" word. Neither is Rhinosaur.

Just looking at the word itself, it may mean iron eating. Ferric
means made of iron or containing iron, and vourous is an affix
that means eating. So if one wanted to make a word that meant
iron eating or metal eating, then Ferrivorous would work.

Deek,
Well, from a chemical standpoint, ferri- is used to indicate iron in the
plus 3 oxidation state. Maybe the -ivorous is like carnivorous. That
would make it something like an iron eater. I am not really serious about
this but it works with the mercurial line right before it.

Here is a post from Mr. Perlman on 5/23/96 regarding the use
of the word Ferrivorous. This should clear things up.

There is no such word as 'ferrivorous' as is printed in the
lyric
sheet for NTMF. The closest you can get is 'ferriferous,'
which
Webster defines as 'containing or yielding iron.' The
following is an
excerpt from the Canadian radio premiere that Chris
Mackenzie posted a
few days ago, which actually supports the 'iron eater'
theory and also
alludes to the fact that maybe it was just spelled wrong
when Chris
wrote it down:

Steve Warden: Hi welcome back, the next track we're going to
play is a
song called 'Never The Machine Forever,' notable for a few
reasons,
not the least of which is its use of a very unusual word:
"ferrivorous." I asked Chris Cornell and Matt Cameron to
shed some
light.

Matt Cameron: Uh let's see, iron eater? Is that right?

Chris Cornell: I guess so.

MC: And there's no known synonym for the word ferrivorous,
that's
Kim's whole point for using it - no (laughs). It's just a
very
interesting combination of words that he used on that one
and Chris
actually pulled it off (laughs).

SW: Ferrivorous (laughs).

CC: (sings annoyingly) Ferrivorous! (laughter)

SW: I've never heard that one before, is Kim a real
wordsmith, is he a
pretty heavy reader?

MC: Uh let's see, yeah I suppose, I think he used to read
more than he
does now.

CC: Yeah, let's just put it this way: he can talk better
than I can
spell.

> As for Mercurial... ???

I would go with Geoff's explanation of this word having to
do with
personality rather than mercury content. Webster says:

mer.cu.ri.al \(.)m*r-'kyu.r-e--*l\ \-e--*-le-\ aj [mercury +
-al] 1: of,
relating to, or born under the planet Mercury 2: having
qualities of
eloquence, ingenuity, or thievishness attributed to the
god Mercury or to
the influence of the planet Mercury 3: characterized by
rapid and
unpredictable changeableness of mood 4: of, relating to,
containing, or
   caused by mercury - mer.cu.ri.al.ly av -
mer.cu.ri.al.ness n

I would choose definitions 2 and 3 as being appropriate...

ferrivorous is a REAL word in REALLY BIG dictionaries, meaning 'ability to
consume iron; derived from latin roots ferrous (iron) and voros (eat)'. thus,
suggesting "'stronger than iron' direction and drive". however, Mr.
Smartypants has an infirm grasp on latin, capitalization and spelling. we
can't all be perfect.

Definitely agreed. His drumming for 'Corduroy' was simply awesome.
However, I do miss Jack Irons' drumming on 'Given To Fly.' Matt never
seemed to get the same quality of beat. But hey, 1 out of many, many
songs ain't bad.

I know there were only 100,000 copies of SOMMS made, so obviously it's
very rare. On ebay, the online auction store, bidding for SOMMS has risen
to $36.00. The auction ends on the 11th, so I'm assuming it will rise to
around $50.00, probably more. It's also sealed. Do you think it's worth
it to spend $50.00+ for it?
