I believe this is *somehow* the way things went, in
regards to the new manager:
Chris & Jim became friends while Jim was working at
A&M. After Jim left A&M, he and Chris continued their
close friendship.
Just before Susan decided to retire...Chris then
*chose* to put his career in the hands of his good
friend Jim. (no dout, a friend whom he trusted)

So what should a singer/songwriter song sound like? Is there really a
formula that has to be followed? Jen, I know it takes alot to speak out
against an artist you respect so much, and i have to agree with what you
have said. Lets not forget that she is only stating her opinion, which is
just as valid as everyone elses..

Former Soundgarden Frontman Unleashes Solo Effort; Chris Cornell's
'Euphoria Morning' Slated for Fall Release

LOS ANGELES, June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The long-awaited solo project by
Chris Cornell, titled ``Euphoria Morning,'' will be
released on September 21st on A&M Records/Interscope. The album was
recorded over the past six months in the Los Angeles
studio of Alain Johannes and Natasha Shneider (of the band Eleven),
with all three handling the production efforts.

After spending the last 12 years with Soundgarden, Chris has taken a
deliberate departure from his former band's trademark sound. The new
album is lyrically his most
personal to date, and musically veers in a more singer- songwriter
direction. ``With Soundgarden, I assumed the role as another instrument
in the band: the lyrics I wrote
were often influenced by the mood of the music,'' says Cornell. With
this solo record, the reverse would happen -- the music is tailored to
the mood of the lyrics. Music is
of course important, but I wanted the lyrics and vocals to be the
central focus. Once the lyrics become the most important point of
songs, you can't really get more
personal than that.``

Kicking off with the infectious, in-your-face lead single, ``Can't
Change Me,'' the album also features the moody rock epic, ``Preaching
the End of the World,'' the
seductively foreboding ``Follow My Way,'' and the beautiful and biting
``Sweet Euphoria.'' ``Disappearing One'' and ``Mission'' showcase
Chris' harder edge, taking the
listener on a musical voyage, crossing all genres and styles.

``Can't Change Me'' will hit radio stations everywhere on August 9th,
with an accompanying video serviced to both MTV and VH1. Look for Chris
to tour U.S. theatres
in the Fall.

Subject: NEW Chris interview in Kerrang!

This interview with Chris is from the latest Kerrang! (out today in the UK,
dated 19th June). It's a little different from the ones we've been reading
recently, not least of all because Kerrang! - and especially Morat - were
always great at showing the humourous, playful side of Soundgarden.

Deb

ALONE IN THE SUPERUNKNOWN

After Seattle superstars Soundgarden imploded in 1997, frontman CHRIS
CORNELL went to ground. Two years later, he's back with a solo album
recorded and UK dates planned. Here's how the Black Hole Son came out of
exile.Words: Mvrat

"Management have requested you don't ask about the break-up of Soundgarden,"
informs the disembodied voice of an American record company person moments
before I'm put through to ex--Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell at his home
in Seattle. Given that I've only heard three tracks - including the 'Blow Up
The Outside World'-style ballads 'Can't Change Me' and 'Preaching The End Of
The World' - from Cornell's forthcoming solo LP in the sterile confines of a
record company office, this is not helpful news.

The last time I saw Chris was in January 1997,towards the end of an
Australian tour where Soundgarden were headlining to audiences of 35,000 on
the city-hopping Big Day Out festival. After what turned out to be his last
interview for Kerrang! we sat on the balcony of his plush Sydney hotel room,
ushered outside by his wife and then-manager Susan Silver because of our
filthy smoking habits. Whether he knew by then or not, Chris gave no
indication that the band were to split up only a few months later. And if
nothing else, he showed every sign of being able to fend off difficult
questions without the intervention of his 'management'.

The customary greetings are made. "I've had some ups and downs, but I'm
better now," concludes Chris, clearly in good spirits. "I think it's because
of spring.., and the medication."

Then I launch straight in. Chris, I've been 'requested' not to ask about
Soundgarden. "You have?" he says, apparently hearing this news for the first
time.

After the split, Kim Thayil (guitar) told Kerrang! that the band had simply
reached the pinnacle of everything they had set out to achieve. So, what
really happened?

"The main thing wasn't so much that we'd reached the pinnacle," argues
Chris, "but Soundgarden started out as an independent band - and the
business side just became too big. It seemed like suddenly there were
expectations and plans being made outside of the band. Nobody seemed
comfortable with that."

Soundgarden had indeed become a vast business. At the time of the split,
their last album 'Down On The Upside' was Number One in Australia and riding
high in numerous other charts. Capable, on a good night, of playing to the
gods, their records frequently tampered with the undergarments of genius. It
seems ironic that on the Australian tour (after a few lacklustre
performances elsewhere), they were playing breath-taking shows.

"Yeah, some of those shows were the best we've ever done," agrees Chris.
"But I also think some of them were the worst we ever did. But the fact that
it was a great record and we played great shows makes it feel better. At
least we didn't fizzle out pitifully and then decide to quit cos no one
liked us any more . It was more like, 'Okay, let's knock off for a while'."

How long did you to get writing again, or did you never stop?

"I took some time off and I didn't really know what I was gonna do" admits
Chris. "Doing a solo thing where I make all the decisions and do whatever I
want should have made the process a lot easier, but in a way it made it
harder. I had a whole bunch of songs that I'd written already, but I pretty
much dumped all that and started from scratch. I've done that on a bunch of
Soundgarden records too. When it's time to record I decide that I want
everything to be brand new so I like it more - and that's what I did on
this."

Cornell is already known for penning many Soundgarden classics including
'Black Hole Sun' and 'Blow up The Outside World', but going it alone is a
different thing. Did you feel you could spread your wings at last; or was it
a nervous time?

"I was pretty nervous," admits Chris. "But if I wrote something I really
liked, then I knew for a fact it would be on my record. When you're in a
band sometimes you write things you really love and nobody else does - which
is fine, cos that's what makes a band."

So who were your filters on this solo album?

"I kept it pretty close to my chest and didn't really play it to anybody,"
muses Chris. "I played some stuff for Alain (Johannes) and Natasha
(Schneider) from Eleven: they ended up working on some stuff; they
co-produced and played on the record, kinda being my band and my sounding
board for a lot of stuff. My biggest problem was that I wanted more rock
songs on the record and I wasn't writing them - every time I did, it sounded
just like Soundgarden."

Surely it's bound to?

"It's not like I never want to sound anything like that," counters Chris.
"But I wanted to do something completely different. Like when Ozzy left
Black Sabbath and the first solo thing he did sounded like them and he was
trying to get a guitarist like Tony lommi - I didn't wanna do that.

"I actually had a lot of offers from rock bands, really strange offers like
these industrial and hip-hop groups who wanted me to play on songs - and one
band who wanted me to be their singer. A lot of it sounded like it might be
fun, but I didn't do any of them. I figured I should at least get a solo
record out of the way first."

Do you imagine that Soundgarden fans will like the solo album?

"Some of them will probably hate it and a lot of them will like it,'
ponders Chris. "That's a tough one. When a record company is releasing a
record they try to imagine what age group it might attract, but with this it
's hard to say.

"No one ever really understood who Soundgarden's fans were. It's not like
The Offspring or something, where everyone's under the age of nine. I'll
probably get more girls showing up because the songs are more
singer-oriented with not such an aggressive approach."

As yet, Cornell hasn't played any solo shows and, aside from Natasha and
Alain, has yet to confirm his band.

"I don't think I wanna play guitar so I'll have to find a guitarist," he
deliberates. "I kinda loosely know who I want. I won't be playing with
anyone I don't know, in other words."

So it'll be friends, rather than someone who's technically brilliant but a
pain in the arse?

"I was hoping for both" laughs Chris. "I have to be a solo enigma now and
get more into myself. So everything's gotta be about me!"

Soundgarden largely burned themselves out touring and often hated being on
the road towards the end. Cornell is understandably cagey about the subject.
Tentative UK dates are set for October, but what about beyond that?

"I don't know," says Chris simply. "I wanna go out and see what it's like.
It's gonna be completely different. I like the idea of playing theatres
because the best shows we ever did were in theatres. When Soundgarden were
first opening on the Guns N' Roses tour, running around on 400 yards of
aluminium stage, I felt pretty out of place. If it's really fun and I have a
great time, then there'll be no reason to stop.

"I've been off the road for a long time, so I'm sure it'll take me a while
to get tired of it." Even longer before we tire of Cornell's new music.

Hooray! An article that actually talks to Chris. All
is well in the world again. What were we all getting
so worried about I ask?

Jay.

p.s. All this talk about Sunshower doesn't really
matter because it's not on the album. Perhaps Chris
thought it wasn't good enough.
