It was an attempt to appease the people who are panicking because they can't. Actually I'm much less sad than I would have expected (and that is the unbelievable truth!). I truly have been too busy to dwell on it much. The thing I AM sad about is missing the experience of hanging with other SOMMSTERS, being a part of that. And now it appears that I've angered the very people I wish I were getting together with, which was never my intention. But I still don't see how I was putting out bad vibes to the people who are going. If that's how you took it, I'm sorry. The news of the free downloads comes less than two weeks after a handful of U.S. radio stations received letters ordering them to stop playing the new single. Cornell's longtime label, A&M Records, ordered 25 radio stations to stop playing ``Can't Change Me,'' the single from his upcoming solo debut ``Euphoria Morning,'' scheduled to hit stores Sept. 21. The cease-and-desist letters came as some of those stations were readying the song for a free download in the controversial MP3 format from their official Web sites. But, the stations had broken the air date for the song by nearly two weeks. More than 30 alternative-rock stations across the United States posted the song Friday and will keep it up for an undetermined number of days. Cornell joins a growing list of major artists, including Tom Petty and Jewel, who have used free MP3 downloads during the past year to promote new singles. ``I've spent so much time making this record, and I'm so proud of it,'' Cornell said. ``It's exciting to take advantage of this technology and get music to people right away.'' ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Aug 1999 07:54:16 -0700 From: "Tannenbaum, Samuel ISSN" Subject: Re: For those.... The sound of Soundgarden changed (more or less) on every album. I like some albums more than others, but I love their whole work. And it means that I don't like Ultramega OK because it's a LP made by the same group that made Badmotorfinger or Superunknown. I like UOK because I like it, that's all, because I get into the music. I love the first three albums of Pearl Jam. Should I like their last two albums for that reason? I can't get into No Code and Yield (maybe a little into this). I don't like Can't Change Me, definitely. I have heard it time after time, and I don't like it. No matter whether the author is the guy who has thrilled me with his voice in 7 incredible albums along with 3 other amazing musicians. The same way, I like Jerry Cantrell's solo work, but it doesn't catch me like any AIC album. I like Porno For Pyros, and Jane's Addiction is one of my 3-4 favourite bands. The style of both groups is rather different. I don't mind whether Perry Farrell is PFP's singer and Stephen Perkins the drummer. I like them. I think it doesn't have to be question of loyalty to an artist. You like their work or not. I am quite surprised by the reaction of most people on this list. Months before there was a reaction of refusal on "Sunshower". I found it was a very good song (below Soundgarden's level), though I still preferred "Seasons". Many people on this list, remember, critisized that song hardly. They began to speculate about the content of the album: commercial, Chris has sold out,... And now we get the first single. (This is MY opinion, as good or bad as any other's) Sunshower is far better and less commercial than Can't Change Me, and... most of you like it!! No bad review at all !! OK, nothing to say, I've got nothing to say... (sic) Can't Change Me reminds me of one million similar songs I have heard before, mainly the vocals. And I don't like the guitars at all. If Chris wanted to make something similar to Jeff Buckley or Mark Lanegan I think he has taken a very different path from those two monsters. I think Chris is much more talented to make real masterpieces. Pablo ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Aug 1999 11:50:20 -0500 From: tonerkin Subject: Re: For those.... I think my message of yesterday about the head banging was taken a bit too seriously. It was a joke. Sometimes my strange sense of humor gets lost in the translation to the brain of "normal" people! I feel that all opinions are valid but I also think that everyone needs to practice some relaxation techniques and CHHHHIIILLLL!!! We all hope for some great work of art from Chris but no one knows if we will get that. It seems like we have a pretty split decision on CCM. I myself am voicing no opinion one way or another until I hear the WHOLE thing. I don't LOVE every SG song and I don't always like the "hit" that record companies pull out of CD's either. So I am sitting tight and keeping my fingers crossed that the CD is going to make me fall in love with Chris' music all over again. On another note. The DJ on Q101 here in Chicago said this morning that PJ is signed on to do the 13th annual Bridge School benefit(Neil Young's project) and that Matt Cameron will be with them and according to sources not only is Matt going to record with them but also tour when they go out. toni ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Aug 1999 12:18:25 -0700 From: Barbara Strong Subject: Re: I've thought of a fourthly, and a fifthly, and a sixthly... And today, listening to CCM again and thinking of what some of you Sommsters wrote, which was that the song is much less edgy and hard than SG material, I came up with a very simple idea. In my views, the melody and the vocal part of CCM are fairly "mellow" so to speak, even if they also express a slightly dark mood. But they are combined with a heavily percussive, almost Africa-oriented drum part. This is a true invention of rock music, and I think it belongs to Soundgarden. It would be interesting to research which was the first track sang by Cornell and played by Cameron on the drums to combine this softness/heaviness. Maybe "Hunger Strike", but I don't have the time for an appropriate consideration of the matter right now. Maybe someone among you does. By the way, because of this element being very typical of SG, I don't think we're facing something acutely different from Soundgarden in CCM. It's a quieter-than-average song, that's all. It is less complex harmonically, probably because of the lack of Kim's crazed guitars. It's a good song, and it's always nice to hear Chris' voice. I had trouble getting the clip, so cause I'm a technical genius, and you're not :) Here's the URL you enter in your RealPlayer location bar to watch it. pnm://209.244.186.40/smirror/ubl/epk1_hi.rm for 56k modems pnm://209.244.186.40/smirror/ubl/epk1_lo.rm for 28k modems Dave Out. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Aug 1999 19:03:15 EDT From: Niki Freer Subject: i got off being sold out... for those of you who are praying for a glimmer of hope: chriscornell.com updated to include the "jukebox" which is nothing more than the ccm.mp3 they also updated cctv, which i cant view because i'm not going to buy a stupid realplayer just to view it. but you can hear the audio even if you dont see the video. he sings the first line of "preaching the end of the world " [lyrics sheet is good for something...] and then talks about his feet with natasha, i am assuming. snore, mindriot ps- kathie, you've got a long way to go before you become caryn!! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Aug 1999 13:50:20 +1200 From: Adrian Humphrey Subject: Rusty Cage In the August issue of Guitar World there was an interview with Everlast - his fav songs and shit. You're all here bitching about Chris not going to your city. The Chicago people seem to be especially mad. Now imagine living in a country no one seems to want to come to because our dollar blows. If you guessed Canada, well you're absolutly right. I wasn't expecting Chris to come here for the mini tour or anything, but chances are he won't be here for the big one, or any other one after that. Rarely does a band who makes enough money tour Canada. They figure, they'll go to Toronto and Vancouver and whatever, they won't be making enough profit for it to be worth while. I hate how people do this. Hey, they all sell records here too! We're not like some third world country who can't afford it *altho we're on our way there*. So PLEASE stop complaining, and just feel the pain of being a canadian fan of ANY music. *forever angered* Jill ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Aug 1999 22:36:29 PDT From: Dave George-Cosh Subject: Re: touring Well, for starters, take a deep breath, fellow Canuck, cause you shouldn't worry. Chris will most definitely come to Canada? Why? Well, there's is an announced North American tour that's gonna be done around 2000, which means that if Chris was only coming to US, then it would be a US tour...you catching me? The most probable place he'll come is Toronto, with Vancouver being a distant second. Toronto is pretty much a secured date, as Muchmusic will be able to promote him and EM across Canada without him leaving the city, and Toronto is arguably the country's hotbed for music. I know for sure, when he comes to Toronto, I'm there. If I have to quit my job, fine, I'll quit, but I want to have the one opportunity to see Chris and fulfill one of my dreams :). He'll come, and we'll have a Toronto SOMMSfest, cause Canadians kick ass. Eh Marc H.? :) And if you think the North American tour is just US and say, Mexico, I laugh at you. :) Dave >You're all here bitching about Chris not going to your city.
