"Ty Cobb" is the final single from Down On The
Upside and the final single in Soundgarden's 13-year career,
leaving "hard-headed, fuck you all" as their parting words. It was
released as a limited edition (300 copies) club promo CD in Europe in
January 1997, sealed with a fluorescent green sticker emblazoned with
those unforgettable lyrics. It was then released again in mid-April,
only days after the band announced that it was calling it quits. This
release is available only in Australia. There is no video for the
song.
The track list for the release is as follows:
- TY COBB
Music: Shepherd; Lyrics: Cornell
©1996 You Make Me Sick I Make Music (ASCAP)/Stupidditties (ASCAP)
Supposedly "Ty Cobb" was originally titled "Hot Rod Death Toll," but
the title was changed when one of the members said it reminded him of
Ty Cobb (played baseball with the Detroit Tigers in the early 1900s;
still has the all-time highest lifetime batting average (.367)). The
song showed up in some of Soundgarden's live performances before the
album was released, most notably the 1995 Reading Festival. It
features a 20-second intro written by Ben Shepherd and includes
mandolin and mandola performances by him and Chris Cornell.
- RHINOSAUR
Music: Cameron; Lyrics: Cornell

- BIG DUMB SEX
Music & Lyrics: Cornell
©1989 Loud Love Music (ASCAP)
"Hiro, our bass player at the time, hated that song. He thought it was
obnoxious butt rock, a total rock'n'roll cliche. We tried to explain
to him that the song was making fun of butt rock. We were fed up with
bands beating about the bush, just using euphemisms and metaphors for
the sex act. We thought we'll ditch all the euphemisms and say what
all the disco dance bands had been trying to say for a decade. We were
simply trying to kick all the lame-ass rock'n'roll and dance music of
the '80s and late '70s in the butt. It's a parody of the whole genre
of stupid rock." --Kim Thayil
- RHINOSAUR (THE STRAW THAT BROKE THE RHINO'S BACK REMIX)
This version of "Rhinosaur" was remixed by ex-Ministry member Bill
Rieflin, adding an industrial sounding clank in the background and
distorted vocals.
