Soundgarden's involvement in Singles goes beyond contributing songs to its soundtrack, though the soundtrack is considerably more well-known than the film itself. Released in 1992, the movie includes Chris Cornell's acting debut (outside of music videos), a cameo that only lasts a few seconds; Soundgarden is seen (and heard) performing "Birth Ritual," which appears on the soundtrack as well; and during the posting of a Citizen Dick flyer, a demo version of "Spoonman" is heard. The soundtrack's liner notes pay homage to Soundgarden, too: the fictional Citizen Dick CD is called Smarter Than You, and its design is an obvious parody of Louder Than Love; track 7 is entitled "Louder Than Larry," a spin-off on "Loud Love," which is track 7 on Soundgarden's 1989 release. The song was written, performed, produced, and mixed entirely by Cornell, and is only available on the Singles CD. There are lyrics and a sound clip [AU: 0.60MB] available. "Birth Ritual," written by Cornell, Matt Cameron, and Kim Thayil, is a favorite "rare" Soundgarden track, later appearing as a b-side on one of the "Fell On Black Days" singles. The demo version of the song has appeared several times as a b-side, on the "Black Hole Sun" and "My Wave" singles in 1994 and the "Burden In My Hand" single in 1996 (misprinted on the Australian version of the CD as "Birth Control").
