"Black Hole Sun" is the song that put Soundgarden over the top, made them the darlings of MTV, and propelled Superunknown to sales in excess of 5 million copies. Consistent with the release schedule of the time, there were at least 9 different versions of the single distributed throughout the world.
The video for "Black Hole Sun" was easily the band's most popular, seeming to play endlessly on MTV. It even earned the 1995 Clio Award for Alternative Music Video. The video was directed by Howard Greenhalgh, produced by Megan Hollister for Why Not Films (London), shot by Ivan Bartos, and features post production work by 525 Post Production (Hollywood) and Soho 601 Effects (London).
